Colts Urged To Avoid Two Risky Draft Picks

Faced with limited draft capital, the Colts must strategically navigate the 2026 NFL Draft to address key weaknesses without risking picks on projects or inconsistent performers.

The Indianapolis Colts find themselves in a unique spot as they head into the 2026 NFL Draft. With their first-round picks tied up due to the trade for Sauce Gardner, the Colts are banking on his return to form after injuries kept him from making an impact in 2025. Gardner remains one of the league's elite players, so there's hope that this trade will eventually bear fruit.

However, the lack of early draft capital, combined with Daniel Jones' ongoing recovery, puts the Colts in a position where they must nail their draft selections. Last season, Indianapolis boasted a top-tier offense before injuries derailed their playoff hopes. To avoid another letdown, they need their draft picks to contribute immediately.

One area of concern is linebacker, especially after trading away Zaire Franklin, the 2024 NFL tackles leader. Franklin's departure leaves a gap in their run defense, and the Colts are expected to prioritize this position with their first pick in the second round.

While Jake Golday, a converted edge rusher, is a name floating around their 47th overall pick, the Colts might want to look elsewhere. Golday's transition to linebacker is still a work in progress, and Indianapolis needs players ready to make an impact from day one.

Alternatives like Anthony Hill and Jacob Rodriguez could offer more immediate stability and production.

The edge position is another critical need, and fortunately, this draft class is rich with pass-rushing talent. The Colts have a good chance of landing a quality edge rusher in the second round.

If T.J. Parker, Chasius Howell, or Zion Young are available, they would be excellent additions.

However, if the choice comes down to R Mason Thomas, Malachi Lawrence, or Derrick Moore, the Colts should be cautious with Moore. Despite his 10 sacks last season, Moore's overall pass-rushing consistency and run defense leave something to be desired compared to his peers.

This draft is pivotal for the Colts. With the pressure to find win-now talent, Indianapolis can't afford any missteps. The right choices could propel them back into Super Bowl contention, while mistakes could lead to another year of disappointment.
