The Colts have settled one of the biggest questions on their quarterback depth chart, and the answer is Anthony Richardson Sr.
According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, head coach Shane Steichen said Richardson will open the 2026 season as Indianapolis’ No. 2 quarterback behind Daniel Jones. That puts Richardson in line as the Week 1 backup after a stretch of uncertainty around his future with the team.
"Colts HC Shane Steichen announces that Anthony Richardson Sr. will be their No. 2 QB behind Daniel Jones to start the season," Holder reports.
The move is notable because Riley Leonard had been viewed as a real contender for the job, but he did not beat out Richardson. Leonard, who showed some promise during his 2025 rookie season, will not begin the year as Jones’ primary backup.
Richardson’s place on the roster has been a major talking point since he missed most of the 2025 season because of a freak injury. At one point, the former No. 4 overall pick looked like a strong trade candidate, especially with the amount of offseason buzz surrounding him.
The Colts never moved him, though, and now he’s still in the building as Jones’ backup. Richardson also requested a trade after the 2025 NFL season, but the team did not deal him.
With Jones back as the starter after a brutal mid-season injury ended his breakout 2025 season, Indianapolis now has its quarterback hierarchy set to begin the year. Richardson, once a player on the trade block, is suddenly positioned to be the next man up if Jones has to miss time.
