NFL trades have become a lot less unusual than they used to be, and the league has already seen some major names move in the last year. Micah Parsons, A.J. Brown, and Myles Garrett have all been dealt, and the trend has made it easier to imagine more star players eventually pushing for a change of scenery.
One name that could fit that conversation is Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor.
Taylor has been one of the league’s top backs for years. The Wisconsin product led the NFL in rushing in 2021, then followed that up with his second-highest rushing total in 2025. Even with that production, his name has surfaced in trade chatter before, and Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report recently included him among players who could soon ask out.
Davenport pointed to the mileage on Taylor’s body and the timing of his career. Taylor has more than 1,500 career carries and will turn 28 next January, an age when many running backs start to slow down. He also noted that all those touches have taken him to the playoffs only once, which could make the idea of chasing a contender more appealing.
That possibility matters because Taylor is also heading toward a contract crossroads. He is set to be a free agent after the 2026 season, so if Indianapolis believes he is unlikely to stay, moving him now would be a way to avoid losing him for nothing later.
At the same time, this is not a simple call for the Colts. Taylor is still producing at a high level, and if Indianapolis does make a playoff push in 2026, he figures to be a central part of it. Last season, he ran for 1,585 yards, scored a league-high 18 touchdowns, and earned his third Pro Bowl nod.
Trading a player that productive would be a bold move, but the Colts could also be looking at the long game. D.J. Giddens and Seth McGowan are waiting behind Taylor, and either one could become part of the team’s future if Indianapolis decides to make a move.
