The Indianapolis Colts have been on a mission this offseason, making a flurry of moves with 20 new additions in March alone. Yet, despite the hustle, a few critical areas still need attention. Let’s dive into the Colts' top three roster needs and how things are shaping up.
Defensive End
The Colts started the offseason needing more firepower on the edge, having finished tied for 15th in sacks last season with 39. The departures of Paye and Ebukam left a gap, and with Lewis still on the market, the need for strong edge rushers is pressing. The team brought in Key and Clemons, but replacing Paye, a five-year starter who consistently logged 650 defensive snaps per year, remains a priority.
The recent signing of Davis-Gaither at linebacker helped stabilize the position after trading away Zaire Franklin. While Davis-Gaither steps in for Pratt, the Colts still need someone to fill Franklin's shoes effectively.
Offensive Line Depth
With Jalen Travis stepping in as the new starting right tackle after Smith's move to the Texans, the Colts have some stability in their starting lineup. Travis showed promise with playing time late last year, which should ease concerns.
However, depth is a different story. Pinter's departure to Baltimore leaves a void at backup center, especially with Bortolini's history of concussions.
An additional interior player to challenge Dalton Tucker for the third guard spot would be ideal, and the competition between Luke Tenuta and Blake Freeland for the swing-tackle role lacks excitement.
Keep an Eye On: Running Back
The Colts drafted DJ Giddens on Day 3 last year, hoping he'd make an immediate impact. Although he didn’t find his footing as a rookie, he's not a barrier to enhancing the depth behind Jonathan Taylor. Re-signing veterans like Tyler Goodson or Ameer Abdullah, who were key contributors last year, remains on the to-do list.
In summary, while the Colts have been proactive, filling these gaps will be crucial as they aim to solidify their roster for the upcoming season.
