The Green Bay Packers have emerged as a new contender in the pursuit of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. This development comes as Richardson and his team have been given the green light to explore trade options, although no immediate deal seems to be on the horizon following the whirlwind of free agency activity.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is known for his knack with quarterbacks, a reputation that Colts head coach Shane Steichen also shares. Richardson has been linked with other teams like the Los Angeles Rams and Cleveland Browns. The Minnesota Vikings were previously in the mix but may have shifted focus after signing veteran Kyler Murray and retaining JJ McCarthy.
Richardson, the 4th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, is just 23 years old but has had a tumultuous start to his career. Limited to 17 games over three seasons due to injuries and a benching in 2024, he lost the Colts' starting job to Daniel Jones last preseason. A freak injury in 2025 further sidelined him, leaving the Colts scrambling for a quarterback late in the season.
His journey with the Colts has been anything but smooth. Richardson showed promise in his rookie year before a shoulder injury cut his season short.
The following year, he struggled with consistency and decision-making, leading to a brief benching. Despite some late-season improvement, injuries continued to plague him, and he lost the starting role to Jones, who excelled until he too was injured.
Richardson's athleticism is undeniable, but questions about his accuracy and durability linger. He completed just 47.7% of his passes in 2024.
Yet, his youth and potential are attractive, especially if paired with a coach skilled in quarterback development. The Colts may not recoup the high draft investment they made in Richardson, but his upside still holds significant appeal.
