FBI Investigating Circumstances Surrounding Late Colts Owner Jim Irsay’s Death
INDIANAPOLIS - The death of longtime Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay is now under federal investigation, with the FBI reportedly looking into the circumstances surrounding his passing, including potential concerns related to substance use and his ties to a well-known addiction specialist.
According to a federal grand jury subpoena reviewed by investigators and confirmed by individuals familiar with the case, the FBI is seeking information about Irsay’s death, his history with substance use, and his relationship with Dr. Harry Haroutunian, a prominent addiction specialist based in California.
Federal agents reportedly spent several days in Indianapolis earlier this month conducting interviews with people close to Irsay during the final years of his life. While full details of the investigation remain under wraps, the focus appears to be on understanding the broader context of Irsay’s health and personal relationships in the lead-up to his passing.
Colts Chief Legal Officer Dan Emerson confirmed in a phone interview that the organization is aware of the investigation but has not been contacted directly by the FBI.
“I do understand that there have been some subpoenas provided, but not to me, the Colts or any of our current employees,” Emerson said.
Irsay passed away at the age of 65 while vacationing in California in May 2025. His death marked the end of an era for the Colts franchise, which he had overseen as owner since 1997. Known for his passion for the game and his deep ties to the Indianapolis community, Irsay was a larger-than-life figure in the NFL world - both for his contributions to the league and his personal battles, which he never shied away from publicly acknowledging.
As the investigation unfolds, there are still more questions than answers. But one thing is clear: the legacy of Jim Irsay - complex, impactful, and deeply intertwined with the identity of the Colts - continues to resonate, even in the wake of his passing.
