Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen is now facing two misdemeanor charges after his arrest last month in downtown Indianapolis.
Court records show Allen has been formally charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration of equivalent to .15 or more.
The incident traces back to around 1 a.m. on Aug. 30, when Indianapolis Metropolitan police saw a vehicle park in front of a meter with a “no parking” sign posted on it. An officer first approached to let the driver know he couldn’t park there, then identified the driver as Allen and noticed signs of intoxication, according to the probable cause affidavit.
The affidavit says Allen had “extremely slurred speech and glassy eyes.” Officers also reported “the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.” Allen “constantly licked his lips, which is consistent with the ingestion of alcohol,” according to the affidavit.
Allen took a portable breathalyzer test and failed to register a reading twice. Police described him as “extremely short winded.” A later attempt at 1:22 a.m. produced a reading of 0.224, nearly three times Indiana’s legal limit.
During booking, other officers said Allen showed more signs of intoxication, including unsteady balance and “bloodshot and watery eyes.”
He also failed multiple standard sobriety tests. According to court documents, those included trouble with smooth eye movement, difficulty walking heel to toe and difficulty standing on one leg.
Allen consented to a blood draw before being taken to the Marion County Jail.
The case was filed Tuesday, and Allen and his counsel waived the initial hearing that had been scheduled for Wednesday.
Allen signed with the Colts on Aug. 19 to help at wide receiver. He made his debut in the home preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Aug. 29 and then played in the Colts’ season-opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
General manager Chris Ballard said the team handled Allen’s arrest internally and would let the legal process play out. Ballard also said the NFL would handle the next steps in the disciplinary process.
