Colts May Be Holding Up A Steelers Trade Fans Will Debate

As the Colts clear house, the Pittsburgh Steelers eye a potential trade to bolster their defense with a key player before the deadline looms.

The Steelers are sitting one win away from heading into the bye at 6-2, and that timing lines up neatly with a trade deadline that could shape the rest of their season. Omar Khan has the draft capital to make a move, or even a couple of them, and the kind of help Pittsburgh needs most could come on either side of the ball. A receiver would draw plenty of attention, but the Colts may have a defender available who fits the Steelers’ needs just as well.

Indianapolis has made it pretty clear it is in sell mode. Chief Executive Officer Carlie Irsay-Gordon sent that message by firing longtime general manager Chris Ballard, with Ed Dodds now operating as the lead front office executive on an interim basis and presumably working with ownership on the next steps. Right after a Week 7 loss, the Colts traded two organizational staples in Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, and Josh Downs could also be available as a trade target.

That kind of move fits the reality of the Steelers’ deadline situation. Pittsburgh can chase a pass-catcher, sure, but the roster need doesn’t stop there.

The secondary has dealt with injury issues, and the depth is not what it was back in August when Joey Porter Jr. was still around. That is why a veteran corner like Charvarius Ward starts to look awfully practical.

Ward is in the second season of a three-year deal with the Colts, so any trade would require sorting through how much salary each side takes on. If Indianapolis wants to move him, it may have to absorb part of the contract. There is also a path where he is designated as a post-June 1st cut in 2027, which would leave under $7 million in dead cap and $18 million in savings.

This is not the sort of blockbuster that would shake the league, and Indianapolis probably cannot squeeze high-end draft value out of Ward. But that is exactly what makes him interesting for Pittsburgh. If Khan wants to improve the secondary without paying a premium, Ward looks like the kind of target worth pursuing.

The Steelers currently hold nine total selections in 2027, including two sixth-rounders and two seventh-rounders. Depending on how the contract talks go, that gives Pittsburgh some flexibility to work with. The Colts are clearly open to moving productive players, so the idea of a deal here is hardly a stretch.

Ward has started all seven games for Indianapolis, posting five passes defended and 21 total tackles. He would give the Steelers another experienced option in the back end, and his Super Bowl ring brings something extra to the locker room if Pittsburgh is thinking about a postseason push.

For now, the Steelers have managed to hold up without Porter in the lineup. The run defense has been strong, and the unit overall has handled the absence reasonably well.

Still, another injury to a real difference-maker would change the picture in a hurry. That is why Khan should be active in the coming weeks, and why checking in on Ward - and maybe Downs, too - makes plenty of sense.

Colts Just Sent A Painful Message About Their Deadline Plans

The Colts moved on from one of their most recognizable linemen on deadline day, dealing All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to Seattle as a clear sign they were willing to make a tough football decision in the middle of the season. Nelson was in the final year of his contract, and the return gives Indianapolis future draft capital while closing the book on a player who has been a fixture of the offense for years.

For Seattle, the move is a straightforward bet on help up front, with the Seahawks taking on the rest of Nelsons deal to make the trade work. For Indianapolis, it leaves a bigger question hanging over the rest of the deadline window: whether this was the start of a broader reset, or simply the one deal they felt compelled to make before the market disappeared. Cam Bynum Showed Colts Fans Exactly What He Brings After Loss

After the Colts Week 7 loss to Minnesota, Camryn Bynum did what a lot of former teammates do after a reunion game: he shared a lighthearted photo with Harrison Smith that quickly made the rounds on social media. The moment had some humor to it, but it also underscored the connection Bynum still has to the Vikings and the respect he earned there, especially with Smith as a veteran presence during his Minnesota years.

For Indianapolis, though, the more important takeaway is what Bynum has already become on this defense. He has been on the field every week, functioning as a steady starter and one of the secondarys main communicators even as the Colts have worked through uneven results. In a season where the defense has needed reliability, Bynum has given them exactly that, and the loss in Minneapolis only put a brighter spotlight on how much he brings beyond the postgame moment. Colts Just Sent Their Rebuild Into Another Gear

The Colts roster overhaul took another sharp turn with the decision to move on from DeForest Buckner, a longtime anchor on the defensive front and a three-time Pro Bowler. The trade comes with Indianapolis in the middle of a difficult season and signals that the organization is continuing to reset pieces while reworking the roster around what comes next.

Buckner was in the final year of his contract, and his departure sends him back to the place where his NFL career began. For the Colts, the move adds another layer to a rebuild that has already forced some hard choices, and it leaves plenty of questions about how far this reshaping will go before the season is over.
