Colts May Already Be Headed For Another QB Reset

Amid the fallout of the Colts' quarterback decisions, Anthony Richardson reflects on the career-altering impact of Chris Ballard's tenure.

Anthony Richardson didn’t sound eager to pile on after Chris Ballard was fired, even if the Colts’ quarterback situation is part of the reason Indianapolis is still searching for answers.

On Wednesday at his locker, Richardson made sure to show appreciation for the former general manager who pushed for him with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft.

“I always appreciate any support I get, especially from a guy like (Ballard), his position that he had on this team. He believed in me enough to have me here.

I’m forever grateful for that. I’m trying to do my part and not make him feel like he made the wrong decision with me being here.”

That pick has become one of the defining swings of Ballard’s tenure, and it’s hard to separate Richardson from the larger story. Ballard wanted the quarterback, took the chance, and it simply has not paid off. Richardson has not developed into the kind of player that decision was meant to produce.

The bigger problem for Indianapolis is that Richardson may not even get much more runway to prove otherwise. Shane Steichen is not expected to move away from Daniel Jones as the starter, even with Jones struggling badly. Richardson’s rare physical tools haven’t been enough to change that equation, and the Colts don’t appear ready to hand him the job back.

It’s the kind of miss that can keep a franchise stuck in place for years. When a team spends a first-round pick on a quarterback and that player never becomes the long-term answer, the organization eventually has to reset and start the search all over again.

And Ballard’s quarterback issues did not begin with Richardson. After Andrew Luck suddenly retired in 2019 and before Richardson went No. 4 in 2023, Ballard had multiple chances to solve the position and didn’t. By the end of his run, the Colts had used 14 different starting quarterbacks during his tenure.

Richardson is still viewed as a good person, but that hasn’t changed the football reality around him. His accuracy and decision-making remain the question marks hanging over his NFL future, and if he does become the player Indianapolis hoped for, it may not happen there.

That leaves the Colts staring at an uncomfortable possibility down the line. By Week 1 of 2027, the franchise could be on yet another quarterback, once again hoping it has finally found the long-term answer.

Colts Face A Core Decision That Could Reshape This Roster

The Colts are heading toward one of those crossroads seasons that forces an organization to decide what it really wants to be. Several notable players are set to become free agents after the year, and the list includes DeForest Buckner, Quenton Nelson, Josh Downs and Grover Stewart. Indianapolis has the cap space to keep moving forward, but it also has enough looming decisions to make the roster feel fragile if the front office starts thinking beyond this season.

Buckner remains one of the leagues most dependable interior defenders even as the years pile up, while Nelsons long-term status is still unsettled after no extension materialized. Downs has not yet matched expectations, and Stewart could be staring at a financial reset if the Colts try to keep him in the fold. With so much talent potentially in play, the bigger question is whether Indianapolis wants to keep adding around this core or risk taking a step back in hopes of reshaping the roster on its own terms. Jonathan Taylor Just Became Part Of The Colts' Biggest Decision

Chris Ballards firing changed the conversation around Jonathan Taylor almost immediately, because once a general manager goes out the door, every major roster decision suddenly feels up for review. For the Colts, that means the star running back is no longer just a centerpiece on offense. He has become part of the larger question about what comes next, and whether the new leadership wants to keep building around him or use the moment to reset.

Around the league, there is already plenty of interest in where Taylor might fit if Indianapolis decides to listen. Several clubs are being mentioned as potential landing spots based on their needs and current situations, which only adds to the pressure on the Colts to define their direction quickly. For now, there is no confirmed trade activity, but Taylors status is now tied to one of the biggest decisions the franchise has made in years. [Read more 🡒]

Colts Fans Have Every Right To Worry About The Sauce Gardner Trade

The Colts made their big swing for Sauce Gardner during the 2025 season, betting premium draft capital and a young receiver on a proven corner who could change the look of their defense. It was the kind of move that signaled urgency in Indianapolis, but it also came with the kind of risk that always follows blockbuster trades, especially when future picks are the price of admission.

That risk feels a little sharper now because Gardner has already missed time with a left calf issue, leaving Colts fans to wonder how much value the team is actually getting back from the deal. With Indianapolis having given up major draft capital, the trade has naturally fueled speculation about whether the front office could look for another path before the 2025 deadline if the fit does not start paying off soon.
