Colts Linebacker Battle Is Heating Up After An Encouraging Start

With the preseason underway, Colts head coach Shane Steichen is feeling optimistic about the team's previously worrisome linebacker corps after a strong showing against the Patriots.

The Colts still don’t have their linebacker picture fully sorted out, but Shane Steichen liked what he saw in the first preseason game against New England.

The Indianapolis coach said the group showed plenty of activity and impact in the opener, and he singled out rookie Bryce Boettcher for one of the biggest moments.

"I was really pleased with those guys," Steichen said on Sunday, via Colts.com. "Those guys were flying around.

There was some big plays made. Some big-time hits."

Boettcher’s big hit and tackle for loss stood out, and the overall production from the linebackers backed up Steichen’s view. Boettcher, Jaylon Carlies, and Austin Ajiake all earned strong run-defense grades from PFF. Together, the three combined for 10 tackles without a miss and six run stops, while allowing just 34 total receiving yards.

At the moment, CJ Allen looks set as a starter, with Akeen Davis-Gaither next to him. Behind that pair, Ajiake, Boettcher, and Carlies are still battling for backup spots.

The Colts have kept the rotation heavy at linebacker, and defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has indicated that could carry into the season. Steichen, though, thinks the picture should become clearer as camp rolls on.

"Honestly, I think that's going to play itself out," Steichen said. "Right now we're in a rotation with all those guys, and I think a lot of those guys bring different attributes to our defense. They're doing a lot of good things, so I got a lot of confidence in that group and, shoot, we got a couple more weeks of training camp, and we'll go from there."

Colts Backup O-Line Battle Is Heating Up At The Right Time

The Colts have kept busy along the offensive line, bringing in veteran guard Will Hernandez along with tackles Trey Wedig and DAnte Smith for workouts as they look to sort through their backup options. Hernandez, 30, brings experience from his time with the Giants and Cardinals, while Wedig and Smith come in as younger tackle options with backgrounds tied to the Rams, Cardinals and Bengals organizations.

For a team trying to stay sturdy up front, these evaluations matter even in the margins. Indianapolis is still weighing how those pieces fit, and the timing suggests the Colts are trying to add depth before any real need turns into a problem. [Read more 🡒]

Colts Add Proven WR As Pressure Builds Around Injury Concerns

The Colts kept building out their receiver room by adding Keenan Allen on a one-year contract, bringing in a veteran who has spent his career with the Chargers and arrives with six Pro Bowl nods on his rsum. Allen gives Indianapolis a proven target and some much-needed depth at a spot that has been watched closely in camp, especially with the passing game still sorting out its pieces.

Alec Pierces ankle injury has made that need even more apparent, with his status lingering as a concern as training camp unfolds. Allens arrival gives the Colts a steady option to lean on while they wait for more clarity at receiver, and his career production, 1,055 catches, 12,051 yards and 70 touchdowns, is the kind of track record that makes the move feel like more than just insurance.
