Colts Let Another Winnable Game Slip Away Late Against Steelers

In a dynamic showdown, Jaylen Warren's explosive plays proved pivotal in leading the Steelers to a decisive victory over the Colts.

Jaylen Warren gave Pittsburgh the kind of jolt that can change a game in a hurry, and the Steelers rode that burst to a 34-22 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Warren turned in the biggest splash plays of the afternoon, scoring on an 80-yard pass and a 50-yard run while finishing with 188 yards from scrimmage - 101 on the ground and 87 through the air - on 21 touches. Aaron Rodgers kept the offense humming as well, throwing three touchdown passes for the third straight game.

Pat Freiermuth was on the receiving end of two of those scores for Pittsburgh (3-2), and Rodgers finished 22 of 31 for 235 yards.

Indianapolis (2-3) got a strong day from Spencer Shrader, who matched the franchise record with five field goals. Tyler Warren added a rushing touchdown and led the Colts with seven catches for 83 yards, but the Colts’ two-game winning streak came to an end.

The game tightened in the third quarter when Shrader hit a 22-yard field goal to pull Indianapolis within 17-16 with 10:23 left. Pittsburgh answered five plays later with the play that broke things open: Jaylen Warren sliced through the middle at the 50 and raced into the open field for a touchdown that pushed the Steelers ahead by eight with 7:06 remaining in the quarter.

Shrader kept Indianapolis close with a 40-yard field goal later in the third, trimming the margin to 24-19 with 2:13 left. Early in the fourth, Taylor’s 20-yard run helped the Colts reach the Pittsburgh 10, but Jones threw three straight incompletions and Indianapolis had to settle for a 28-yard field goal from Shrader.

That was as close as the Colts would get. Rodgers found Freiermuth again for a 17-yard touchdown, and Chris Boswell added a 54-yard field goal to put it away at 34-22 with 3:43 remaining.

Pittsburgh jumped first after Shrader opened the scoring with a 57-yard field goal on Indianapolis’ first possession. On the Steelers’ next offensive play, Rodgers hit Jaylen Warren on a short pass, and Warren broke free after shedding a tackler for an 80-yard touchdown down the right sideline with 8:45 left in the opening quarter.

Shrader answered with a 56-yard field goal with 6:55 left in the first, but Rodgers later finished a 12-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Freiermuth, putting Pittsburgh up 14-6 with 13:17 left in the half.

The Colts moved back within one when Tyler Warren, lined up in the backfield on fourth down, powered through on second effort for a 1-yard touchdown with 7:43 left before halftime. Boswell closed the half with a 48-yard field goal that gave the Steelers a 17-13 lead.

Pittsburgh also lost more depth at receiver during the game, with Roman Wilson leaving with a dislocated finger and Ben Skowronek exiting with a calf injury. The Colts were already without Michael Pittman Jr., who was placed on injured reserve Saturday.

DK Metcalf Just Gave Colts Fans A Reason To Watch Sauce Gardner

A Colts-Steelers matchup already had enough edge to it, but DK Metcalf added a little more with his pregame posture toward Sauce Gardner. The Pittsburgh receiver brushed off the Indianapolis defensive backs game, saying he does not worry about what a defensive back does well, turning a routine opponent preview into a small piece of bulletin-board material for a defense that has already spent plenty of time studying how to handle him.

There is a little history here for Colts fans to keep in mind, too. Gardner has already shown he can disrupt Metcalf when their paths cross, even if his season so far has not matched his best work, which makes this one of those matchups worth watching closely for Indianapolis. When a receiver sounds this unconcerned and a corner has something to prove, the first few snaps can tell you a lot about where the day is headed. [Read more 🡒]

Colts Suddenly Have A Big Defensive Void Before Steelers Game

The Colts are heading into Sundays matchup with Pittsburgh already having to patch together their depth chart on both sides of the ball. Arden Keys absence leaves a noticeable hole on the edge, while Darius Slayton was downgraded to out and Indianapolis brought Nick Westbrook-Ikhine up from the practice squad to help at receiver. It is the kind of late-week shuffle that can quietly change how a game is approached, especially for a team still trying to manage other injuries.

Jaylon Carlies and Ashton Dulin are also out, and Keenan Allen along with Charvarius Ward Sr. are both listed as questionable, so the Colts will have to navigate the game with several moving parts. Pittsburgh has its own injury concerns as well, which may make availability as important as matchup plans when the teams kick off. [Read more 🡒]

Colts Face A Dangerous Week 5 Swing Factor In Pittsburgh

Acrisure Stadium is shaping up to be a tricky place for the Colts in Week 5, with the remnants of Hurricane Isaias expected to bring significant rain to Pittsburgh. The weather alone could make this a different kind of game for Indianapolis, especially for a team trying to clean up the details on offense and stay ahead of a Steelers defense that thrives on forcing mistakes.

Daniel Jones is already under the microscope because of his recent turnover issues, and a wet field only adds another layer of concern. If the conditions get sloppy, the ball-security battle could become the swing factor, giving Pittsburgh exactly the kind of edge it likes to find in games like this. [Read more 🡒]
