Patrick Mahomes didn’t need much time to explain how the Kansas City Chiefs got out of Sunday night with a win. Seven words did the job.
“We fought until the very end,” Mahomes said after the game.
That was the story of a 33-30 overtime escape against the Indianapolis Colts, a game that kept swinging, kept answering, and kept refusing to end until Harrison Butker finally ended it with a 40-yard field goal as overtime expired.
Butker had already drilled a 31-yarder earlier in overtime, only for the Colts to answer with a field goal of their own and force Kansas City back onto the field one more time. Mahomes and the Chiefs made that last possession count.
Mahomes turned in a huge night statistically, finishing 32 of 47 for 382 yards and three touchdowns. He hit Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals for scores, with Royals’ touchdown standing out as the first of his NFL career and coming on fourth down. Kelce finished with nine catches for 101 yards, and Worthy found the end zone for the first time this season.
Kansas City also got a major boost from Kenneth Walker III, who rushed for 117 yards and added 61 more through the air for 178 yards from scrimmage. Even with that balance, though, the Chiefs still had to rely on Mahomes to solve the game late.
Indianapolis kept forcing the issue. Jonathan Taylor ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns while adding 40 receiving yards, and Daniel Jones did enough with the passing game to keep the Colts in the fight, going for 210 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The Colts even caught a break when an apparent Laquon Treadwell fumble was overturned after officials ruled he was down by contact. Kansas City never let that moment rattle it.
Mahomes kept pushing the ball down the field and hit Tyquan Thornton for a 45-yard completion that flipped the field in a hurry. He also leaned on Kelce in the biggest moments, with the Colts clearly aware where the ball was going and still unable to get the stop they needed.
Butker finished the night with four field goals, and his last one - the 40-yarder at the end of overtime - kept Indianapolis from ever getting the ball back.
Kansas City did not clean everything up. The Chiefs allowed 30 points, never fully separated, and needed two overtime possessions to put the Colts away. Andy Reid will have plenty to sort through before Week 3.
Still, the result was a reminder of how hard it is to finish off this team when Mahomes is still standing. The quarterback delivered when the Chiefs needed him most, Kelce looked like Kelce, Walker added another layer, and Butker handled every kick that mattered.
Indianapolis dropped to 0-2 and stretched its losing streak to nine games dating to last season. The Colts were close enough to make this one sting, pushing Kansas City past regulation, matching the Chiefs’ first overtime field goal and getting within one stop of leaving Arrowhead Stadium with the upset.
That stop never came.
