Head coach Shane Steichen said Wednesday that Pierce will be out for at least four games and will be placed on injured reserve, a development that only sharpens the questions around how Indianapolis has handled injured players. Pierce had been cleared by medical staff after surgery on his heel/ankle in March, then missed all of training camp and the preseason before returning to practice in the days before Week 1. By Week 2, he had aggravated the same injury.
That sequence lands especially hard because it echoes what happened with quarterback Daniel Jones last season. The Colts were comfortable letting Jones keep going with a broken fibula, he was cleared by medical staff after suffering the injury in Week 10, and then he tore his Achilles tendon in Week 14 in the other leg. The source of those injuries may not be connected, but the timing makes the whole thing look strange.
Pierce isn’t the only example that raises eyebrows. Indianapolis also let Charvarius Ward continue playing in 2025 after he had two concussions by midway through the season. He was cleared by the medical staff, then went on to suffer a third concussion.
That’s the pattern hanging over the Colts now: players are being cleared, sent back out there, and then getting hurt again soon after. Whether those cases were all coincidence or not, the result is the same - the team keeps running into the same painful reality, and it’s hard to ignore.
