Colts Hit A New Low As Questions About This Roster Grow

As midseason reshuffles the NFL power rankings, find out which teams are rising to the top and who might be slipping.

The Bills are still sitting at No. 1 in PFT’s Week 9 2026 NFL power rankings, but the gap behind them keeps shifting. Buffalo is 6-1, and while the defense is trending up, the offense needed a little time to find its rhythm.

The Jaguars hold firm at No. 2 after a 5-2 start, with the kind of timing that can make a team look even better than it already is. They caught the Colts at the perfect time, and they’re catching the Ravens at the perfect time.

Right behind them, the 49ers land at No. 3 after a bye week that was supposed to help Christian McCaffrey get healthy. The Vikings, who were No. 3 last week, slip to No. 6 at 6-1, and the note attached to them is simple: a quarterback change may be needed.

The Broncos keep climbing, moving to No. 4 at 6-2 after a win that the rankings summed up in one line: They out-chiefed the Chiefs. Kansas City drops to No. 7 at 5-2, with the question hanging over them now: Can the Chiefs beat the best teams in the league?

The Bears are one of the biggest risers in the top tier, up to No. 5 at 6-2, and the message is loud: The Bears are NOT who we thought they were - they’re serious contenders to win the whole thing. The Steelers sit at No. 8, also 6-2, with a schedule that could set them up for a 12-win season.

Seattle falls to No. 9 at 4-4, and the warning is blunt for the Seahawks and Rams, last year’s NFC finalists: one of them may not make it back to the playoffs. And maybe both. The Patriots check in at No. 10 at 5-3 after they avoided the South Florida trap, again.

Cincinnati keeps moving in the right direction at No. 11, where Joe Burrow is emerging as a serious MVP candidate. Detroit is No. 12 at 5-2, though the defense is taking another hit from injuries, again. Cleveland comes in at No. 13 at 5-3, with the note that Jared Verse should’ve learned a lesson, but probably didn’t.

Green Bay sits at No. 14 at 5-3, and the running game remains a liability. The Rams are No. 15 at 4-4, with the wins piling up and Myles Garrett lurking. The Giants are No. 16 at 4-2-1, and the question there is whether they’ll go all-in for a high-end running back.

Las Vegas is No. 17 at 4-4, with a Kirk Cousins-Kyle Shanahan reunion game looming. Tampa Bay lands at No. 18 at 3-5, and in two full games since returning from a thumb injuries, Baker Mayfield has thrown 14 passes. Baltimore is No. 19 at 4-4, and the trade deadline question is whether they should be buyers or sellers.

The Cardinals slide to No. 20 at 3-5, with the suggestion that they should move to Dallas. Or to L.A.

Atlanta is No. 21 at 3-5, and at least they play in a dome. Carolina checks in at No. 22 at 3-4, joining the list of teams that will be chasing Mike Tomlin.

Houston is No. 23 at 2-5, and the margin for error is getting smaller all the time. Washington is No. 24 at 2-4-1, tagged with Backward Hat Energy. New Orleans is No. 25 at 2-5, but still very much alive to win the worst division in the NFL.

Dallas tumbles to No. 26 at 3-5, a neat summary of offseason hype, in-season tripe. Philadelphia is No. 27 at 2-6, and that Super Bowl win from two years ago feels like it was two decades ago.

At the bottom, Tennessee sits at No. 28 at 1-7, and unlike the Colts, the white-flag trade of Jeffery Simmons didn’t cause them to quit. Indianapolis is No. 29 at 2-6 with a simple directive: Trade everyone.

Miami is No. 30 at 1-6, where Malik Willis has had two solid games in a row. The Jets remain last at No. 31 at 2-6, with the note that everyone except Woody Johnson knows it’s time for a coaching change.

Colts Loss Exposed The Same Problems Fans Are Tired Of

The Colts Week 8 loss to Jacksonville had a familiar feel, the kind that leaves fans replaying the same frustrations after the final whistle. There were a couple of encouraging individual efforts tucked inside the defeat, with Adetomiwa Adebawore and CJ Allen standing out as rare positives, but the bigger picture was hard to ignore. Too many of the same issues showed up again, from uneven execution to a game plan that never seemed to settle in.

Shane Steichen and Lou Anarumo both came under scrutiny for how the game unfolded, while Laiatu Latu and Tyler Warren also drew criticism for underwhelming play. The loss added another layer to the growing concern that Indianapolis keeps running into the same problems in the biggest moments, and the Jaguars game did little to ease that unease. For a team trying to establish consistency, it was another reminder that the margin for error is getting smaller. [Read more 🡒]

Jonathan Taylor Trade Talk Just Put The Colts On The Spot

The Vikings first loss after a 6-0 start has only sharpened the conversation around their offense, and it has put Jonathan Taylor back into the center of trade speculation. For the Colts, that means one of their most important offensive pieces is suddenly part of a bigger league-wide discussion, with Minnesota looking for a way to create more balance and take some pressure off its attack.

Any path to a deal would be complicated, though, because adding a player of Taylors caliber would demand major draft capital and a real cap maneuver on Minnesotas side. For Indianapolis, the noise is a reminder of how valuable Taylor remains and how quickly outside interest can turn into a front-office test, even if nothing official has been put on the table yet. Josh Downs Trade Buzz Puts Colts Deadline Pressure In Focus

Trade chatter around Josh Downs has turned one of the Colts more intriguing roster questions into a deadline storyline. The second-year wide receiver is drawing interest as Indianapolis weighs its options, and the market is already taking shape around a player who has been a useful part of the offense while also looking like the kind of asset that can pull real value in return.

The timing matters because the NFL trade deadline has a way of forcing teams to decide whether they are buying, selling or simply holding firm. Several clubs with receiver needs are watching, and the Colts have a decision to make on how aggressive to be in talks as the deadline gets closer. For a team trying to balance present production with future flexibility, Downs has become a name worth tracking. [Read more 🡒]
