The Colts are heading into training camp with one of their most important questions sitting right on the edge of the defense: who starts opposite Laiatu Latu at defensive end?
That job is open after Kwity Paye left the roster, and it comes at a time when Indianapolis has already turned over a big chunk of the position group. Paye, Samson Ebukam and Tyquan Lewis are gone, while Arden Key, Micheal Clemons, George Gumbs Jr. and Caden Curry were added during the offseason.
Right now, the clearest names in the mix are Key and Jaylahn Tuimoloau.
Tuimoloau’s 2025 season gave the Colts something to build on, and the benefit of a full offseason focused on development instead of the pre-draft process should help him as he tries to make a Year 2 leap. Key brings a different selling point: steady pass-rush production over the course of his career.
If there’s a lean at the moment, it goes to Key because of the experience edge. But this is far from settled, and training camp should decide it.
What Indianapolis needs, though, is bigger than just picking a starter. The Colts need more pass-rush help around Latu, because while Latu was productive last season, the production next to him came and went. Whether Key or Tuimoloau wins the job, the bigger question is still unanswered: can either one give the Colts the kind of high-end pressure off the edge that changes games?
That remains one of the biggest unknowns on the roster entering the 2026 season.

Colts Could Face Their Biggest Anthony Richardson Decision Yet
Anthony Richardsons place on the Colts has already become one of the more delicate storylines of the summer, with Daniel Jones expected to open as the starter and Richardson fighting just to secure the backup job. For a former No. 4 overall pick, that is a sharp turn from where the franchise once hoped he would be, and it has only added more weight to every practice rep and roster conversation around him.
Richardson has also asked for a trade, which makes the Colts quarterback picture even more complicated as they try to sort out what comes next. The organization now has to balance the value of keeping a young quarterback with obvious upside against the reality that his situation may no longer fit cleanly inside the depth chart, and any move involving him would ripple well beyond the quarterback room. Colts Camp Is About To Answer A Huge O-Line Depth Question
Training camp is set to put the Colts offensive line depth under the microscope, and the biggest early questions are not necessarily about the starting five. Matt Goncalves is expected to open at right guard, but rookie Jalen Farmer gives Indianapolis at least a little reason to watch that spot closely as the team sorts out how much competition there really is for snaps inside.
The more immediate battle may come in the tackle room, where the first man off the bench could matter before long if injuries start to pile up. Luke Tenuta, Blake Freeland and Nolan Rucci are all in the mix, with Tenuta carrying the edge for now because of his recent NFL experience, while the others try to make their case over the course of camp.
