The Indianapolis Colts opened training camp with a small but meaningful wrinkle: CJ Allen is not on the practice field after a minor calf injury landed the rookie linebacker on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.
The team is treating it as a short-term issue, not something that should linger, and there’s still confidence Allen will be back during camp. Even so, it’s an early interruption for a player the Colts clearly had in mind for a major role right away.
Allen, the former Georgia standout, was taken with the 53rd overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and arrived with real expectations attached. Indianapolis viewed him as a candidate to compete for a starting job immediately in defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s defense.
What makes his absence notable is the responsibility the Colts were prepared to hand him. Coaches have repeatedly pointed to his football IQ, leadership, and communication as reasons he was the favorite to wear the defense’s green-dot helmet.
That role lets one player take the play call directly from the sideline and pass it along to the rest of the unit, essentially serving as the quarterback of the defense. General manager Chris Ballard called Allen a “green dot guy from the get-go” after the draft.
That kind of trust is unusual for a rookie, but Allen earned it at Georgia, where he helped steer one of college football’s top defenses. His ability to read offenses quickly, organize teammates, and lead on the field convinced the Colts he could handle the jump to the NFL faster than most first-year players.
For now, the setback means lost reps, and those matter in camp. Still, because Allen is on the Active/PUP list, he can return to practice at any point once he’s medically cleared.
If he gets back on schedule, Indianapolis still expects Allen to become a centerpiece of Anarumo’s defense. The Colts drafted him with the belief that his intelligence, leadership, and physical tools could make him the defensive leader they wanted - and that view hasn’t changed because of a brief pause at the start of camp.
