The Indianapolis Colts may have a Keenan Allen problem hanging over them, but the bigger issue is the timing.
Allen was arrested on August 30 and is facing misdemeanor charges for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.15 or higher. A suspension from the NFL is expected at some point, but the league is reportedly waiting for the legal process to play out before deciding anything.
That’s where things get messy for Indianapolis. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the NFL is expected to hold off until Allen’s case is resolved, and the next court date is set for October 26.
That hearing, though, won’t settle the question of guilt or innocence. It’s an attorney conference, which leaves the league without a clean timeline for action.
And that uncertainty creates a strange possibility: Allen could go through the rest of the season before the legal case is even finished. If that happens, any suspension might never affect the Colts at all.
There’s also the chance the case wraps up during the season, which would open the door for Allen to be sidelined for at least three games, maybe more, right when Indianapolis could be fighting for a playoff spot. That would matter. Allen is working in the WR3 role and helps move the chains with first downs, so losing him would have real consequences in the middle of a stretch run.
The NFL wouldn’t be locked into a three-game penalty, either. That’s only the minimum. With Allen’s blood-alcohol level reportedly at .224, three times the legal limit in Indiana, the league could decide to hit him with a longer suspension.
Still, the most likely outcome is the simplest one: the legal process drags on past the season, and Allen never serves a meaningful suspension because he doesn’t play beyond this year. He’s signed for just one season, he’s 34 years old, and there’s no guarantee he returns to Indianapolis or plays anywhere else in 2027.
If he does remain in the picture, the Colts’ nightmare scenario is obvious - Allen missing the final games of the season. And beyond football, the hope is that Allen deals with whatever issues he may or may not be facing involving alcohol.
