Colts Face A Josh Downs Decision As Trade Interest Builds

The Colts are navigating trade offers for Josh Downs amid increased league interest, while Keenan Allen's future remains uncertain as the trade deadline approaches.

The Colts are in sell mode, and Josh Downs looks like the name drawing the most heat.

Indianapolis has already gotten at least one offer for Jonathan Taylor, and teams have also shown interest in Daniel Jones. So far, though, the Colts have only moved contract-year players. That has put Downs, who is also in a walk year and asked for a trade, squarely in the spotlight.

The team is not planning to deal him simply because he wants out, but the market is real. At least one offer has already landed, and more could follow as the deadline gets closer.

The Colts are believed to have at least a fourth-round pick on the table, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reporting an offer that includes a fourth. The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero added that Indianapolis has received a proposal with a fourth and another draft asset.

If that package holds, it would line up with recent receiver deals involving Rashid Shaheed and Jakobi Meyers. Shaheed fetched fourth- and fifth-round picks, while Meyers brought back a fourth and a sixth.

The Chiefs and Steelers make sense as possible suitors, especially with some AFC teams needing receiver help but likely unwilling to send Brian Thomas Jr. to a conference rival. The Commanders and 49ers are also looking for help at the position, and the Rams, sitting at 4-4 and without Davante Adams for at least a few more weeks, would also figure to be checking the market.

Kansas City has already been tied to Downs this week, and The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones said the former third-round pick is coming up most often in connection with the Chiefs’ search for another wideout. Earlier this week, the Colts were said to be hoping for a third-round pick, and they may wait until the deadline gets closer to see whether that kind of offer materializes. Even so, a Shaheed-type return would still be a solid outcome for Indianapolis given Downs’ uneven production and his role as mostly a slot receiver.

The Chiefs can use another reliable option underneath, even with Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice already working that part of the field. Xavier Worthy, despite his 4.21-second Combine 40 time, has not turned into the deep threat Kansas City has been looking for. Downs would still be an upgrade for a team that has struggled to find consistency at receiver since trading Tyreek Hill.

Downs is not Shaheed, and he is not Meyers either. But he has put up 771 receiving yards as a rookie with Gardner Minshew throwing to him most of the time, then followed that with 806 yards in Year 2 while serving as a key target for Anthony Richardson.

The Colts’ quarterback problems could actually help their leverage here, since Downs, 25, can be sold as a player with more upside still to unlock. That is the pitch his camp will make down the road, and it is also why a move to a better quarterback situation would appeal to him now.

Downs is not the only receiver Indianapolis could move. Keenan Allen has also come up as a name to watch, according to Schefter and Rapoport.

Allen is in his 14th season, is 34 years old, and is attached to a veteran-minimum base salary. If the Colts can find a taker, they would likely prefer to get something back before Tuesday rather than simply cut him.

If he were released after the deadline, he would be subject to waivers. That makes a late-round pick the cleaner route if a trade can be worked out.

Allen wanted a return to Los Angeles in 2025, with the Rams in the mix at the time, but he wound up back with the Chargers. The 49ers already have plenty of 30-something playmakers, though they do need healthier bodies at receiver right now.

If a team misses on Downs and Thomas, Allen could become a fallback option, along with the Titans’ Calvin Ridley, who was mentioned this week as a backup plan. With Thomas not guaranteed to move and the Jets planning to keep Garrett Wilson, Downs may be the top receiver name on the board.

Colts Suddenly Have A Daniel Jones Decision Fans Cant Ignore

Daniel Jones has become a name to watch in Indianapolis as the NFL trade deadline approaches, with multiple reports indicating the Colts have fielded inquiries about the quarterback and are at least open to hearing what might be out there. It is a notable turn for a player whose fit and production have already been under scrutiny, and the situation now adds another layer of uncertainty to a quarterback room that seemed headed for a quieter stretch.

Jones is also said to be interested in a change of scenery, which only sharpens the intrigue around what happens next. The Vikings have been mentioned as a possible landing spot, and the connection makes some sense given Joness familiarity with their offensive scheme, but the real question is whether the Colts decide the timing is right to move on before the deadline closes the door. Cowboys Offensive Uncertainty Could Change Everything For Colts Defense

The Cowboys added some extra depth on the eve of their Week 9 matchup with the Colts, elevating wide receiver Jordan Hudson and tight end James Mitchell from the practice squad. It is a clear sign Dallas is bracing for some uncertainty on offense, with injury questions hanging over the receiver and tight end groups as the game approaches.

For Indianapolis, the timing matters because the Colts defense has spent the week preparing for a Dallas attack that may not look exactly the way it usually does. The roster moves do not settle who will actually be available, but they do suggest the Cowboys want insurance in place, and that leaves the Colts waiting to see how much the matchup shifts once the final injury picture comes into focus. Colts Fans Should Be Bracing For A Stunning Sauce Gardner Twist

The Colts are heading toward the trade deadline with the kind of uncertainty that usually signals a bigger reset is coming. After a disappointing start, Indianapolis is reportedly preparing to make several moves, and cornerback Sauce Gardner is at the center of the conversation despite the fact that he was brought in as a major long-term piece and signed to a record deal just last year.

Gardners name alone would have made this a surprise, but the contract situation makes it even more complicated for the Colts. Any team interested in dealing for him would have to absorb a massive commitment, which is why this is not the kind of move that happens easily even when a front office is willing to listen. Still, with the deadline approaching and Indianapolis looking at its options, this is one storyline Colts fans will want to watch closely. [Read more 🡒]
