The Indianapolis Colts are navigating a challenging offseason as they look to fill the void left by Zaire Franklin. General Manager Chris Ballard has his sights set on the draft to bolster the linebacker corps, but replacing someone of Franklin's caliber is no small task.
Colby Wooden's arrival via trade is a step in the right direction for the defensive line-a key area Ballard aimed to strengthen. However, the linebacker position remains a significant concern.
The situation could become even more precarious if the Colts allow veteran Germaine Pratt to sign elsewhere. Pratt, an eight-year veteran, remains a viable free agent option for Indianapolis.
Yet, he’s not the only one on the radar. The Colts have other potential targets, including players with ties to defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.
Logan Wilson
Logan Wilson, who thrived under Anarumo with the Cincinnati Bengals, is a prime candidate. After a stint with the Dallas Cowboys, Wilson's experience and reliability make him an attractive option for the Colts.
Over his 83-game career, Wilson has amassed 565 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 11 interceptions, 26 passes defended, 5.5 sacks, and seven forced fumbles. His familiarity with Anarumo's system could reignite his best performances in Indianapolis.
Bobby Wagner
While Bobby Wagner may not fit Ballard's typical strategy of targeting younger, faster players, his pedigree is undeniable. Rated as the No. 9 linebacker by Pro Football Focus last season, Wagner's 162 tackles, 4.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, and nine quarterback hits in 17 games highlight his enduring excellence. At 35, Wagner still delivers top-tier production, and his veteran leadership could be invaluable for the Colts.
Germaine Pratt
Pratt, who joined the Colts mid-season last year, proved to be a steady presence alongside Franklin. With 101 tackles, five tackles for loss, eight passes defended, an interception, and a forced fumble in just 12 games, Pratt offers both reliability and depth. His previous experience with Anarumo is an added advantage, making him a sensible option for the Colts to consider bringing back.
As the Colts weigh their options, the blend of veteran savvy and system familiarity could be the key to stabilizing their linebacker unit. Whether through the draft or free agency, Ballard’s decisions in the coming weeks will be crucial in shaping the defense for the upcoming season.
