The Colts are keeping things close to the vest heading into Sunday’s matchup against the Seahawks - especially when it comes to their quarterback situation. Rookie Riley Leonard is officially healthy and practiced in full all week, but head coach Shane Steichen still isn’t tipping his hand on who will get the start under center.
Leonard, who’s been working his way back from a PCL sprain, carries no injury designation into the weekend. That’s a clear green light from the medical side, but Steichen isn’t ready to name a starter just yet. Whether this is gamesmanship or a true decision still being weighed, it adds another layer of intrigue to Sunday’s game.
The Colts also made a notable roster move this week, signing veteran Philip Rivers to the practice squad. The move comes in the wake of Daniel Jones’ season-ending Achilles injury, adding a seasoned presence to the quarterback room. While Rivers isn’t expected to suit up immediately, his presence gives the Colts a proven option if needed down the stretch.
Injury-wise, the Colts will be without several key contributors. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (neck), cornerback Sauce Gardner (calf), offensive tackle Braden Smith (concussion/neck), and wide receiver Anthony Gould (foot) have all been ruled out. That’s a significant hit to both sides of the ball, particularly up front and in the secondary.
Defensive end Tyquan Lewis is listed as questionable with an ankle injury, so his status will be one to watch as kickoff approaches.
All eyes now turn to Sunday - and whether the Colts will hand the reins to their rookie quarterback for the first time. Leonard is physically ready.
Whether he’s the guy to lead the offense this week? That’s still a mystery.
