The Colts took a closer look at veteran pass rush help on Wednesday, bringing in three edge rushers for workouts, according to the NFL transaction wire.
Among the names on the list were Preston Smith and Carl Lawson, two experienced defenders with plenty of NFL miles behind them.
Smith, 33, entered the league as a second-round pick by Washington out of Mississippi State in 2015. He played through the final season of his rookie deal before landing a four-year, $52 million contract with the Packers in 2019. Two years later, Smith was headed into the last year of that deal and due $12.5 million in salary and bonuses before agreeing to a four-year, $52.5 million extension in March 2022.
His path has since taken a few turns. Green Bay dealt Smith to the Steelers in a midseason trade in 2024, and he was released in February before returning to Washington ahead of the season. In 2025, Smith played in 13 games for the Commanders and finished with 24 total tackles, two tackles for loss, half a sack and a pass deflection.
Lawson, 31, was a fourth-round pick of the Bengals in 2017 out of Auburn. He reached free agency for the first time after finishing his rookie contract and signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the Jets in 2021.
By 2023, he was entering the final year of that contract and set to make a base salary of $15 million before taking a pay cut. He became an unrestricted free agent last offseason and later joined Dallas during camp.
From there, Lawson moved between the Cowboys’ practice squad and active roster during the 2024 season. He also spent time with the Ravens in 2025, appearing in one game and recording one tackle.
