The Indianapolis Colts added a proven pass catcher on Monday, agreeing to a one-year deal with Keenan Allen worth up to $8.3 million.
Allen arrives as the questions around Alec Pierce’s status continue to build. Pierce is still out after an offseason ankle injury, and while he had been expected to get back during training camp, he has not taken part in a practice session yet.
Allen spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, marking his second run with the franchise after his first stretch there from 2013-2023. The 34-year-old appeared in 17 regular-season games, including three starts, and finished with 81 catches for 777 yards and four touchdowns.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Allen’s signing on X.
For Indianapolis, the move brings both depth and experience to the wide receiver group, with Allen expected to have a meaningful role. He also gives the Colts another veteran presence in a room that includes Josh Downs, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Anthony Gould and Ashton Dulin.
Allen’s career has been built on production from the moment he entered the league. The San Diego Chargers selected him with the No. 76 pick in the third round in 2013 after a standout run at California, where he earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2011. He went on to win Rookie of the Year in 2013 and later earned Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2017.
Across his NFL career, the North Carolina native has 1,055 receptions for 12,051 yards and 70 touchdowns. Indianapolis is now his third franchise, after earlier stops with the Chargers and the Chicago Bears.
The Colts are coming off another playoff miss, finishing 8-9 last season. Their last postseason appearance came in 2020.

Colts Backup O-Line Battle Is Heating Up At The Right Time
The Colts have kept busy along the offensive line, bringing in veteran guard Will Hernandez along with tackles Trey Wedig and DAnte Smith for workouts as they look to sort through their backup options. Hernandez, 30, brings experience from his time with the Giants and Cardinals, while Wedig and Smith come in as younger tackle options with backgrounds tied to the Rams, Cardinals and Bengals organizations.
For a team trying to stay sturdy up front, these evaluations matter even in the margins. Indianapolis is still weighing how those pieces fit, and the timing suggests the Colts are trying to add depth before any real need turns into a problem. [Read more 🡒]
Colts Linebacker Battle Is Heating Up After An Encouraging Start
Shane Steichen had reason to come away encouraged after the Colts first preseason game against New England, especially with how the linebacker group handled itself. The unit was active from the start, stayed engaged against the run and generally kept the Patriots from finding much easy room underneath, which is exactly the kind of early preseason baseline a coaching staff wants while sorting out a young, rotating position group.
The competition behind the expected starters remains the bigger storyline, with CJ Allen and Akeen Davis-Gaither positioned to open the year in front while the rest of the room keeps pushing for reserve snaps. Bryce Boettcher, Jaylon Carlies and Austin Ajiake all helped make the case that the depth chart could still shift, and the next few weeks should reveal whether that opening performance was a one-night flash or the start of a real battle.
