The Colts are making a few key moves ahead of a pivotal divisional showdown with the Jaguars, and Saturday’s roster shakeup offers some clarity on how Indianapolis plans to approach Sunday’s game.
Let’s start with the headline: linebacker Jaylon Carlies is back. After spending time on injured reserve with an ankle issue, the second-year defender has officially been activated.
The timing here is critical-not just for the Colts’ defense, but for Carlies’ season. Had he not been activated before Sunday, his 21-day practice window would’ve closed, ending his 2025 campaign prematurely.
Instead, he’s ready to go.
Carlies has been trending in the right direction all week, with head coach Shane Steichen noting strong practices. And while veteran Germaine Pratt has held down the fort admirably since arriving midseason, Carlies brings a different dimension to the linebacker room.
Where Pratt thrives against the run, Carlies offers more upside in coverage. Don’t be surprised if we see a bit of a platoon approach moving forward-one that leans into each player’s strengths depending on the down and distance.
On special teams, Blake Grupe is stepping in as the new kicker, taking over for the recently released Michael Badgley. It’s a reunion of sorts-Grupe played under Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason during their time together at Notre Dame. That familiarity might help ease the transition, but the numbers tell a mixed story.
In 11 starts with the Saints earlier this season, Grupe hit 18 of 26 field goals-a 69.2% conversion rate. That’s not ideal, especially when you zoom in on his long-range attempts: just 5 of 11 from 40 yards or more.
But he was perfect on extra points (15-for-15), which had been a nagging issue for Badgley in Indy. If Grupe can stabilize the PATs and find some consistency from distance, he could stick.
The Colts also elevated defensive tackle Chris Wormley from the practice squad for the second straight week. Wormley made his presence felt in his Colts debut, notching a sack and two tackles.
With Tyquan Lewis ruled out due to an ankle injury, Wormley’s role could expand. He brings veteran savvy and versatility to the defensive front-traits that will be especially valuable against a Jaguars offense that can get downhill in a hurry if you let them.
Bottom line: the Colts are getting healthier in key spots, and they’re leaning on some familiar faces to step up in the short term. With Carlies back in the fold, Grupe getting a fresh opportunity, and Wormley adding depth to a banged-up D-line, Indy’s roster is taking shape for what could be a critical game in the AFC South race.
