Anthony Richardson’s path to the regular season just got clearer, and it starts in the backup chair.
Shane Steichen made it official Thursday: Daniel Jones is the Colts’ starter, Anthony Richardson is QB2, and Riley Leonard lost the job. The 2023 No. 4 pick had asked for a trade earlier this offseason, but he never pushed the issue to the point of forcing Indianapolis’ hand. Instead, he came into training camp trying to earn a role, and his preseason work ended up doing the talking.
Richardson spoke after Steichen’s announcement and kept his focus on the opportunity in front of him.
“I’m honored,” he said. “I’m just thankful that they believe in me enough to promote me to QB2.”
He said he is ready to work and that he will give his best for this squad. When reporters brought up the trade request, he shut it down.
“I’m here. I’m not really thinking about that. I haven’t talked to my agent about that …”
Richardson said he reported for OTAs prepared to stay and that camp was about backing Jones. Steichen gave him that backup role Thursday, and Richardson framed it as a sign the staff still believes in him. He is in the final year of his rookie contract, and the Colts already declined his fifth-year option.
There was also a football reason Richardson won the job. His preseason tape beat out Leonard’s.
Richardson went 21-of-33 for 249 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception, and he added 10 carries for 68 yards. Leonard finished 20-of-42 for 199 yards with two interceptions.
That was the gap.
Steichen said he liked what he saw from Richardson in camp.
“I thought he did some good things during camp,” the coach said.
Richardson has only started a handful of games, and injuries have been part of the story. Jones took over the job last season, and a potential Packers trade never came together. For now, Richardson says he is staying put and preparing to support Jones.
The Colts will open the season with three quarterbacks on the roster. Jones starts, Richardson waits, and Leonard sits behind both.
