The Indianapolis Colts are making it clear: they want Daniel Jones to be their starting quarterback at least through the 2026 season. Meanwhile, Anthony Richardson Sr., the 2023 first-round pick, seems to have an uncertain future with the team.
During the NFL Scouting Combine, Colts GM Chris Ballard shared some thoughts on Richardson's status. Despite the buzz about Richardson seeking a fresh start elsewhere, Ballard isn't ready to close the door on him just yet.
"I see a future, yeah," Ballard stated, expressing that the team still values Richardson. "Things change, but yeah. We like Anthony."
Richardson's journey has been rocky. Missing 17 games over two seasons due to injuries, losing the starting job competition, and suffering an orbital fracture during a pregame warmup last fall have all been setbacks. However, Ballard noted that Richardson is "getting better" and has been "cleared to play football," which could make him a viable trade option.
As for Jones, he's set to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year kicks off on March 11. Ballard is optimistic about reaching an agreement before the March 3 deadline for franchise tags. He also mentioned that Richardson has shown growth since the incident in 2024 when he took himself out of a game due to fatigue.
Ballard expressed pride in Richardson's resilience. "I’m proud of him," Ballard said.
"He’s dealt with a lot - injuries, an eye accident. He didn’t win the job, but he’s a good teammate.
Positive, wants to do the right things. It’s trending in the right direction."
Until the Colts secure Jones, Richardson might still be in the mix as a backup plan. However, it seems likely that Richardson will eventually find a new team to call home.
