Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession after being pulled over in Carmel, Ind. on Monday, Oct. 12 and formally charged on Monday, Oct. 19.
Court documents say police noticed the vehicle’s registration was reportedly tied to a different vehicle and had expired. According to the report, the car pulled to the side of the road, and the officer said he immediately smelled the “odor of marijuana” as he walked up to it.
When the officer asked about the smell, Richardson reportedly told police he had smoked marijuana inside the vehicle so he would not do it in front of his children, and said there was a small amount of marijuana in the car. He then got out of the vehicle and was placed in handcuffs while police searched it. The officer reported finding a small mason jar containing a substance believed to be marijuana, along with an opened bag of THC-infused gummies.
The Colts issued a statement to ColtsRoundtable: “We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Richardson is in the final year of his initial four-year rookie contract after being selected No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Colts dismissed general manager Chris Ballard on Monday, which has increased trade speculation around several players, Richardson included.
He was named the opening-day starter in each of his first two seasons, but in 2025 he was officially passed on the depth chart by Daniel Jones. Richardson’s 2025 season ended in Week 6 after a freak pregame accident in which a bar supporting a resistance band broke off and hit him in the eye.
This summer, he competed with second-year player Riley Leonard for the Colts’ backup quarterback job and was officially named QB2 before the regular season. Since the start of 2025, Richardson has appeared in just two games.
Across 17 career games, including 15 starts, Richardson has completed 177 of 350 passes for 2,400 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 17 turnovers, including 13 interceptions and four lost fumbles, for a passer rating of 67.8. He has also rushed 115 times for 634 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Richardson’s citation comes after Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen’s August OWI arrest.
