Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. briefly addressed his recent marijuana possession charge after Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Richardson was charged last week in Carmel, Ind., with misdemeanor marijuana possession following an incident that led to a citation on Mon., Oct. 12.
Per the police report, officers pulled Richardson over because he was driving a vehicle with expired registration that was also registered to a different vehicle. The officer said he smelled marijuana, and Richardson told him he had been smoking in the vehicle so he would not do it in front of his children.
"Richardson then exited the vehicle and was placed in handcuffs as the officer searched his vehicle," according to FOX59/CBS4. "The officer reported finding a small mason jar containing a substance believed to be marijuana and an opened bag of THC-infused gummies."
The Colts said last week in a statement to ColtsRoundtable:
“We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time.”
James Boyd of The Athletic reported that Richardson described the matter as an ongoing legal issue and did not go into much detail.
“I enjoy life. I don’t really regret a lot of things I do.
I appreciate my life. I appreciate God waking me up every morning,” Richardson said, per Boyd, when asked if he regrets the incident.
Any discipline from the league would likely come after the legal process plays out, or if Richardson publicly admits guilt.
Richardson is in the final season of his original four-year rookie deal after the Colts selected him No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Colts also fired general manager Chris Ballard last Monday, adding more fuel to trade speculation around several players, Richardson included.
He opened his first two seasons as the Colts’ starting quarterback, but Daniel Jones officially took over the job in 2025.
Richardson’s 2025 campaign ended in Week 6 after a freak pregame accident, when a bar supporting a resistance band broke and hit him in the eye.
This summer, he battled second-year quarterback Riley Leonard for the backup role and was officially named QB2 before the regular season.
Since the start of 2025, Richardson has appeared in only two games.
In 17 career games, including 15 starts, Richardson has completed 177 of 350 passes for 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns and 17 turnovers, along with 634 rushing yards and 10 rushing scores.

Colts Kicking Nightmare Came Down To One Costly Breakdown
Spencer Shraders rough afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium left the Colts staring at a kicking problem they could not afford. The placekicker missed two field goals in Week 7, including a long try from 56 yards in the third quarter, and afterward he did not duck the frustration that came with it. Shrader said he felt responsible for the loss and pointed to his own process as the issue, a reminder that even one off day can swing a game when special teams become part of the story.
Luke Rhodes, meanwhile, made clear the Colts are not ready to give up on him. The long snapper backed his teammate after the game, offering confidence despite the missed kicks and the sudden spotlight that followed a breakdown in a phase the Colts usually count on for stability. For a team trying to keep its footing, the concern is not just what went wrong in Minnesota, but how quickly it can be fixed. [Read more 🡒]
Anthony Richardson Is Running Out Of Chances To Save His NFL Future
Anthony Richardson entered the league with the kind of ceiling teams spend years chasing, but three seasons in Indianapolis have left the Colts still waiting for the refinement that was supposed to come with time. The 2023 fourth overall pick has flashed the arm strength and athleticism that made him such a tantalizing prospect, yet injuries and inconsistency have followed him through 17 appearances, along with a 50.6% completion rate and a struggle to keep the offense on schedule.
Indianapolis has already moved on in practice and planning with Daniel Jones, which only sharpens the question around Richardsons place in the organization. The talent is still there, and so is the possibility that another team could believe it can unlock him, but the same issues have defined his career so far: accuracy, footwork and decision-making. At this point, the Colts need more than upside from a quarterback who has spent most of his first three years trying to prove he can become the player they drafted. [Read more 🡒]
Colts Star Suddenly Pulled Into Trade Chatter Around Vikings
The Vikings have been working the phones as the trade deadline approaches, looking for help on offense after injuries have thinned out their running back room and interior line. Aaron Jones has been battling through an MCL sprain and then picked up another knee issue, while guard Donovan Jackson is sidelined with a torn meniscus, leaving Minnesota in need of stability as it tries to patch together the right side of its offense.
From the Colts side, the name that has surfaced in the chatter is Jonathan Taylor, a reminder of how quickly deadline speculation can ripple beyond the teams actually involved. Minnesota has not been directly connected to him, but any conversation about available running backs tends to pull in a player of Taylors stature, which is enough to keep Indianapolis on alert as the market starts to take shape.
