Anthony Richardson is back in a familiar-looking spot for the Colts, and this time it comes with a clear label: QB2.
Indianapolis announced Thursday that Richardson won the backup job behind starter Daniel Jones, edging out Riley Leonard for the role. The decision gives Richardson another chance to stay in the mix after a stretch that had left his future in Indianapolis looking uncertain.
Richardson said he was grateful for the opportunity, telling Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan, "I'm just blessed to continue to find a way in this league, continue to find my way on the roster," Richardson said, according to Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan. "I'm just thankful that they believe in me enough to promote me to QB2."
On the field this preseason, Richardson made his case with a mixed but productive showing. He completed 21 of 33 passes for 249 yards with one interception and added 68 yards and a touchdown as a runner. Leonard finished 20-for-42 for 199 yards and two interceptions.
Head coach Shane Steichen pointed to both quarterbacks’ work during camp, saying, "I thought (Richardson) did some good things through camp," Steichen said. "He's continued to develop and grow. ... And same thing with Riley."
He also added, "You never know when their number will be called."
Richardson’s path to this point has not been smooth. He asked for a trade in February, and the former No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft has had an uneven start to his NFL career. In 17 games, he has thrown for 2,400 yards with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, while also rushing for 634 yards and 10 scores.
The Colts open their season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13.
