Tyrese Haliburton’s first night back in a Pacers uniform came with a little emotion, a little rust, and a lot of gratitude.
Before Indiana tipped off its preseason opener at Hilton Coliseum in Iowa on Wednesday, Haliburton made sure to soak in the moment. The building mattered to him.
So did the crowd. And after more than a year away from game action, he let the fans know exactly how much it meant.
“We’re so thankful that you guys came; it’s been 472 days since I’ve played a game of basketball. I wouldn’t want to do it anywhere else, except for my second home,” said Hali.
“I love you guys so much, and I appreciate the patience of this organization. Let’s have some fun!”
The return also carried a full-circle feel. Haliburton played his college basketball there, and stepping back onto that floor clearly hit him. He said the emotions came rushing in as he walked in, remembering how it felt as a freshman just hoping for a chance to wear an Iowa State uniform.
“I got kind of emotional walking in here, because when I came here as a freshman, I just wanted to get on the court in an Iowa State uniform, let alone be able to have enough juice to play an NBA game here,” said Haliburton. “I think that’s crazy. So, all those things and putting that into perspective matters to me, and I’m just excited to be here.”
The comeback comes after Haliburton’s Achilles tear in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, a brutal setback that interrupted what had been a strong 2024-25 season. He was averaging 18.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 9.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game while shooting 47.3% from the field. At 26, he’s still young enough to rebuild the rhythm and strength that made him one of the league’s top point guards, and he’ll lean on advice from Kevin Durant and others as he works through that process.
There was at least one immediate sign that the touch is still there. In the opening minute against the Timberwolves, Haliburton buried an elbow jumper to put Indiana on the board.
It was only one shot, but it was enough to remind everyone what this looks like when he starts finding his groove again. The Pacers will keep easing him back in, using the preseason as a controlled runway rather than rushing the process. With opening night still weeks away, the focus is on helping Haliburton settle in and regain his timing before the games count for real.

Pacers Rookie Braden Smith Drew A Strange Reaction In His Debut
The Pacers preseason win over the Timberwolves at Hilton Coliseum came with an odd little subplot for rookie guard Braden Smith, who heard boos from the crowd during his first NBA preseason appearance. For a player making his debut in a game Indiana controlled, it was a strange welcome, one that caught both Rick Carlisle and Tyrese Haliburton off guard as they watched the reaction unfold.
Smith didnt seem bothered by it afterward, saying he enjoyed the competitive atmosphere and appeared to handle the moment well on the floor. For Indiana, the bigger takeaway was that the rookie held his own in a spirited setting, even if the reception around him made the night feel a little more unusual than a typical preseason opener. Tyrese Haliburton's Return Just Changed The Feel Around These Pacers
Tyrese Haliburtons return to live NBA action gave the Pacers a fresh jolt in preseason against the Timberwolves, marking his first game back after missing the entire previous season while recovering from Achilles surgery suffered in the 2025 NBA Finals. For Indiana, the significance went beyond a routine October tune-up. Getting its lead guard back on the floor, even before the games start to count, changes the tone around a team that has been waiting to see what its next step looks like.
The Pacers now have a little more clarity, and maybe a little more energy, heading toward their regular-season opener on October 21 against the Pelicans. Haliburtons presence does not answer every question, but it does reshape the conversation around what this group can become once the games begin to matter. For a team trying to move past last years lost time, simply seeing him back in live action matters. [Read more 🡒]
Jarace Walker May Be Solving A Pacers Problem Fast
The Pacers opened preseason by beating the Timberwolves, and one of the biggest takeaways had little to do with the final score. Jarace Walker looked like a player with a much larger role in mind, handling the ball enough to lead Indiana in assists, plus-minus and minutes while helping steady the offense in a game that offered an early look at how he might fit into the rotation.
For a team that can use more playmaking and help on the glass, that kind of night matters. Walkers line was notable for the control it showed, and it also came with a reminder of how different he looked from last season, when his path was far less clear. If this is the beginning of a real push for a bigger spot, the Pacers may have found a quick answer to one of their more interesting roster questions. [Read more 🡒]
