INDIANAPOLIS-The biggest Pacers update of the day came from Chad Buchanan, and it was the one Indiana fans have been waiting on.
Tyrese Haliburton, who missed all of last season while recovering from a torn Achilles, is set to enter training camp without restrictions. Buchanan said the team expects its franchise point guard to be ready to roll.
“I think he’s going to be one-hundred percent full go,” Buchanan said. “We’re relying on our medical staff if there’s a day they need to scale back on him, but there’s gonna be no restrictions right away for him.”
For a Pacers team that badly missed Haliburton’s presence last season, that’s as encouraging as it gets. The guard’s absence loomed over a 19-63 campaign, a year after Indiana reached Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
Assistant general manager Ted Wu said the recovery process never really came down to one single breakthrough moment. What he saw instead was a steady climb all summer.
“I wouldn’t say there was a day or a moment that happened,” Wu said. “The progress that he’s made all summer, we really trusted in the work that he put in. You can start seeing little by little his confidence picking up and building.”
Wu said this week has offered the clearest sign yet of where Haliburton stands, though he also expects training camp to reveal even more.
“I think this week we’ve seen the best version of that,” Wu said. “There’s more progress to be made once the training camp starts. We’re excited to continue to put that faith in Ty and trust in the process with him there.”
The Pacers gathered at their annual Pacers Foundation Invitational at Brickyard Crossing Golf Course, and the conversation naturally drifted toward the season ahead. Buchanan and Wu both made it clear they’re not expecting a perfect start, even with Haliburton back in the fold.
Buchanan pointed to the possibility of a slow early stretch, especially with a different stylistic player being added into the mix. In the source article, that player is identified as Ivica Zubac.
“I think we’ve seen this group in the past get off to slow starts and rebound and find their groove,” Buchanan said. “Adding a different stylistic player, the one thing I think we have going for us is Tyrese is very good at figuring out his teammates, as is our coach and our coaching staff.”
That adaptability is part of what makes Haliburton so valuable. He’s more than a pass-first point guard; he’s a player who studies the details, reads his teammates and works to bring out the best in everyone around him.
Even so, the front office is looking at this season through a patient lens. Buchanan said the team hopes to get a clearer read on how everything fits together somewhere around the first third of the schedule.
“You hope by 25-30 games in you start to see some signs of whether it’s clicking or it’s not,” Buchanan said. “We’re also going to be patient with this group.
We’re not going to make quick determination on whether this group is fitting together or not. If we get off to a slow start after ten games, that’s just not a prudent way to approach this group.”
Rick Carlisle’s track record also factors into that patience. Buchanan said the coach’s teams tend to improve as the season unfolds, and he sees that same pattern as part of the Pacers’ identity.
“One thing that’s been an identity of Rick’s teams is they get better as the season progresses,” Buchanan said. “And that’s been the identity of this team too.”
Indiana wants to get back on track, but the message from the front office was plain: this won’t be an overnight fix. Haliburton may be healthy and unrestricted, but the Pacers know it will take time for him and the roster around him to settle in, especially with a new starting center in the picture.
The first stretch of the season, then, is about patience, progress and letting the pieces fall into place. The hope in Indianapolis is that the best version of this team arrives when it matters most.
