Indiana’s 19-win season has pushed the Pacers out of the national spotlight, but ESPN’s Bobby Marks thinks that’s exactly why people are misreading them.
On a recent appearance on Setting The Pace, Marks said the conversation around Indiana has become far too muted, especially given what the team is bringing back and the return of Tyrese Haliburton.
“I was on NBA Today and I made a joke that I have talked so positively about Indiana that I should probably get a key to the city,” Marks said. “I just feel like nobody is really talking about them at all.”
It’s easy to see why the Pacers have been overlooked. Haliburton missed all of last season, Indiana finished with only 19 wins and the Eastern Conference has changed a lot since the team’s last run.
Still, Marks said that focusing on the record alone misses the bigger picture.
“You have 10 players back from the team that lost to the Thunder in seven games,” Marks said. “You've added Kelly Oubre, who had a really nice year in Philadelphia. The Zu thing will be intersting to watch from how they played previously.”
For Marks, the most important boost is the one that isn’t really new at all: Haliburton’s return after a year away.
He said long absences tend to blur how strong a player actually is.
“When players are out a year, you kind of forget how good they are,” Marks said.
Marks pointed to Kawhi Leonard missing almost the entire 2017-18 season before going to Toronto and quickly re-establishing himself as a star. He sees a similar chance for Haliburton if the Pacers get off to a strong start.
“If he can gett off toa. good start and play at a high level, people are like, 'Wow this guy is pretty good. Maybe he isn't overrated,'” Marks said.
“Maybe you can go from 19 wins to 46 wins. That's probably going to dispel doubters.”
Marks also made clear that Indiana won’t be walking into an easy climb. He said the conference around them is stronger now than it was when the Pacers were contenders two years ago.
“This is an Eastern Conference that has gotten significantly beter from when Indiana was a contender two years ago,” Marks said. “But you should be excited about [the Pacers] this year.”
The Pacers aren’t exactly an unknown commodity for anyone who remembers what this group did two seasons ago. But after a year without Haliburton and a collapse to 19 wins, the outside view has shifted.
Marks believes a healthy Haliburton, paired with a familiar supporting cast, can shift it right back.
“When he comes back and the team has success,” Marks said, “I think he can put that notion to bed.”
