T.J. Shannon Jr. might not look like the cleanest fit on a roster at first glance, but there’s a case that Indiana is exactly the kind of place where his game could pop.
The Pacers thrive on pace, pressure, and constant rim attacks, and Shannon’s biggest strength is the same one that makes him so intriguing: he never stops coming downhill. He plays with the kind of fearlessness in transition that would slide naturally into Indiana’s run-and-gun style alongside Tyrese Halliburton.
The catch is that Shannon isn’t some obvious plug-and-play answer. He comes with major flaws, especially as a shooter, and his defensive value is more limited than his energy suggests.
But what he does bring is a nonstop slashing presence that forces defenses to react. That’s the sort of weapon that can matter in Indiana’s system.
Minnesota complicates the picture. Shannon is said to be headed for a larger role with the Timberwolves after they traded Julius Randle and Naz Reid, moved away from size, signed Jonathan Kaminga, and leaned into a system more in the Pacers’ mold around LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards. On the surface, that makes him look like a player the Wolves would want to keep.
But roster construction still leaves room for a deal. Minnesota has multiple centers and multiple wings, yet it lacks a true backup point guard.
Indiana, by contrast, has backup point guard options but is thin on the wing beyond Kelly Oubre Jr., Andrew Nembhard, and Aaron Nesmith. That mismatch opens the door for a possible trade if Minnesota seeks a three-team setup to bring back a quality three-and-D wing while Indiana looks for another open-floor creator.
What makes Shannon appealing to Indiana is the way he plays. He’s a pure rim attacker, a slasher who doesn’t shoot it well but keeps pressure on the paint and makes centers think twice about sitting in front of the basket. He has some defensive upside, but the real selling point is how relentlessly he attacks.
That style was on display against Victor Wembanyama in the playoffs, when Shannon’s rim pressure helped produce huge individual blocking numbers for Wembanyama - nearly enough to threaten the playoff record - while also helping wear down Wembanyama and his conditioning issues.
A deal would take some creativity. Indiana has expiring money in Jarace Walker and Ben Sheppard, and veterans like T.J.
McConnell could interest a third team. Shannon is also on a very small salary, which makes the financial part manageable if the Pacers are willing to move one of their picks.
It would be a swing, no question. Shannon has not proven much yet, and the move would ask Indiana to bet on upside. But if the Pacers are looking for another player who can punish the rim and keep their offense humming, he’s at least worth serious consideration.
