Preseason basketball is almost here, and for the Pacers it comes with a stack of questions that need real answers.
This isn’t just another warm-up stretch for Indiana. It feels like a season that could define the Tyrese Haliburton era, and maybe decide where the franchise goes next. The biggest issue is obvious: Haliburton hasn’t played since tearing his Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the 2024-25 NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
That kind of injury still carries serious weight, even if it doesn’t automatically end a career the way it once did. It remains the toughest rehab path an NBA player can face, and it has wrecked more than a few promising runs.
Jayson Tatum and Damian Lillard were also hit by Achilles tears in that same playoff run, and their returns show just how different the outcomes can be. Tatum came back at a much lower level halfway through this past season, while Lillard, like Haliburton, still hasn’t played a game.
Haliburton sits somewhere between those two cases. He’s not a fading veteran, and he’s not an MVP-level force either. The real question is whether he can get back to the level he had reached before the injury.
If he can’t, Indiana may be pushed toward selling off pieces and beginning a rebuild. If he can, the Pacers could jump right back into contention.
Preseason is where that first clue starts to show up.
There’s another issue lurking lower on the roster, and it might matter just as much over the long haul: who gives this team a real boost off the bench?
The Pacers’ starters are known quantities. The problem is everything behind them.
Their sixth through eighth men are basically set, but beyond that the bench gets thin fast. For Indiana to look like a complete team, one of those deeper options has to break through.
That could mean Jarace Walker, who has not yet lived up to his draft status. It could mean his draftmate Ben Sheppard. Or it could be somebody nobody is really counting on yet.
That kind of surprise matters for contenders. Teams at the top usually get extra value from unexpected places down the rotation, and the source of that help can make all the difference.
The championship Denver Nuggets got it from rookie Christian Braun and journeyman Bruce Brown. Last season’s New York Knicks got it from Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet, among others.
For Indiana, the bench is the biggest concern on the board. It’s hard to feel great about a team when only eight players look playable. If one fringe piece turns into a reliable reserve, that changes the picture in a hurry.
