The Eastern Conference is turning into a brutal sorting exercise, and the Pacers are right in the middle of it.
For Indiana, the conversation is no longer just about whether the team can be good. It’s about where that goodness lands in a conference packed with clubs that all expect to be in the postseason. A sixth seed might look respectable on paper, but in this East, even that kind of finish can feel like falling short.
The top of the conference is crowded with heavy hitters. The New York Knicks are the defending champions and only lost one admittedly very impactful role player from that title-winning group.
The Philadelphia 76ers went out and traded for a top MVP finisher to pair with their MVP center and all-star point guard before signing the greatest player of all time. The Toronto Raptors brought in the man who delivered their only title, and he’s still one of the 10 best players in the league when healthy.
The Miami Heat added a top-10 player too.
And that’s before getting to the rest of the field.
The Cleveland Cavaliers made a bold move for a young power forward and plan to play him up a position as they reshape their identity in a massively oversized frontcourt. The Atlanta Hawks also loaded up on veterans, including defensive stalwart Lu Dort, and now look like the only team that could win multiple games against the reigning champs.
That’s just six teams. It still leaves the Boston Celtics, who are just always good, the Orlando Magic, who expect to be good if they can stay healthy, and the Detroit Pistons, who were the East’s top seed.
So Indiana isn’t fighting for comfort; it’s fighting for survival. The Pacers are one of 10 teams in the conference that would treat missing the playoffs as a failure, and at least two of those teams are going to get left out entirely. That’s a wild place to be.
The challenge for Indiana is that expectations pull in two different directions. After the Finals run two seasons ago, fans want a fast return to the title picture, especially with Tyrese Haliburton back from the Achilles tear he suffered in that run. But the reality is that the Pacers may still be sitting in a tier below the very top of the conference.
The talent is there if Haliburton is healthy. Indiana has Pascal Siakam and a newly reinvigorated Ivica Zubac, along with plenty of solid rotation players and skilled role pieces. That’s a real foundation.
Still, the warning signs are impossible to ignore. Without Haliburton, the Pacers dropped all the way into the lottery and won only 19 games. Injuries were a major part of that slide, but Aaron Nesmith missing all but 45 games was the other huge hit.
That’s why this season feels so unforgiving for Indiana. In a conference that has blown up with talent, the Pacers need to get rolling immediately and keep rolling. The gap between a strong playoff seed and the play-in could be tiny.
They can’t get caught on the wrong side of it. For this era of Indiana basketball, this is the most important season yet, and it may be a long, stressful ride from the start.
