James Johnson is headed back to Indiana, at least for camp.
The veteran forward has agreed to a non-guaranteed training camp contract with the Pacers, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line and Bleacher Report. Tony East of Circle City Spin adds that the deal will include Exhibit 9 language, and says the 39-year-old was with the team in Nashville for its players-only mini-camp and will be in training camp next week.
Johnson brings a long NBA track record and a familiar presence to the Pacers’ room. He has logged 16 years of service across 10 teams from 2009-25, after being selected 16th overall in 2009. In 786 regular season games, he has averaged 7.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 19.8 minutes per game.
For Indiana, this is more about continuity than a new face. Since 2022, Johnson has mostly served as a respected locker-room voice and sparingly used reserve. He appeared in only 39 regular season games from 2022-25, totaling 246 minutes, and played in five games during the Pacers’ run to the NBA Finals in spring 2025.
East also noted that Johnson said last summer he did not plan to retire. Still, the Pacers didn’t have a roster opening for him last season, which left him out of the league after his previous contract ran out on June 30, 2025.
A spot on Indiana’s opening-night roster looks unlikely for now. The Pacers are sitting just $2.2MM below their first-apron hard cap with 14 players on guaranteed standard deals, and a minimum contract for a free agent would carry a $2.45MM cap hit. Unless they move money in a trade, there isn’t enough room to keep Johnson on the roster to start the season.
That doesn’t necessarily close the door. Indiana can add a 15th player on a prorated veteran’s minimum deal beginning November 5, so Johnson could be back later in the year. If that sounds familiar, it should: during the 2023/24 season, he signed four separate contracts with the Pacers between December and February, including a non-guaranteed deal, two 10-day contracts and eventually a rest-of-season agreement.
