Pacers Are Racing To Adjust Around A Very Different New Center

The Indiana Pacers are revamping their strategy around Ivica Zubac's talents, setting the stage for a promising season opener.

Ivica Zubac is already forcing the Indiana Pacers to make changes.

That’s the message from Rick Carlisle as Indiana heads into Wednesday’s season opener at New Orleans with Zubac set to begin his first full season with the team. The Pacers brought him in eight months ago in a Feb. 5 trade with the LA Clippers, and the fit has required some recalibration.

Carlisle said the Pacers are tweaking parts of their system because Zubac does things differently than the centers Indiana has had before.

"Our system is slightly different than what they did with the Clippers," Carlisle said, "but he's working hard at adjusting to how we play, and there's certain things that we're adjusting because he's a little different than anybody we've ever had."

"You never are all the way to your destination," Carlisle continued. "There's always going to be work and adjustments and continued need for attention to detail, with everything, with Zu and everybody else we have."

The move that brought Zubac to Indiana sent Bennedict Mathurin and Isaiah Jackson to Los Angeles. After the trade, Zubac appeared in five games for the Pacers, putting up 11.6 points and 7.2 rebounds in 23.6 minutes before being ruled out for the rest of the season.

Over the two teams, the 29-year-old averaged 14.1 points and 10.6 rebounds in 48 games. He also earned NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors in 2025 with the Clippers, who had acquired him from the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2019. The Lakers drafted him 32nd overall in 2016.

What Indiana is learning quickly is that Zubac changes the game on the glass. Milwaukee grabbed 18 offensive rebounds to Indiana’s 8 in Friday’s 128-127 overtime win and outscored the Pacers 23-6 in second-chance points. Zubac finished the first half with 11 points and 11 rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting, then sat after halftime.

Tyrese Haliburton said the Pacers responded by emphasizing boxing out, including from the guards, and called Zubac the best rebounder the team has played with. He also noted that Zubac’s screening gives Indiana a different rhythm in pick-and-roll action, while Pascal Siakam has pointed to the way Zubac alters the Pacers’ offense on the other end.

Andrew Nembhard, who started all 57 games he played last season and averaged 16.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 7.7 assists in 31.3 minutes before a back issue ended his year over the final seven games, is also in the middle of the adjustment process. He missed the Oct. 13 preseason game at Oklahoma City, then returned for the finale against the Milwaukee Bucks and scored 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting with seven assists.

For Nembhard, the focus is on communication, chemistry and understanding where everyone wants to be.

"Just communicating what we see out there and understanding," Nembhard said. "We're just working on him getting up to touch.

He's always been in a drop. I think the biggest thing that he helps us with is the defensive rebounds and our defensive possessions, but start our offense too."

Indiana’s projected starting five is Haliburton, Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith, Siakam and Zubac. Haliburton tore his right Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals and did not play last season, while Nesmith missed the last two preseason games with a hamstring injury.

Even with the changes, Nembhard said being back around a group that believes it can contend is energizing.

"It's been like a year or so, so it's just like creating that chemistry like I was talking about," Nembhard explained. "A lot of guys can do a lot of different things out there, so just trying to be aggressive but also fit in at the same time."

Obi Toppin May Be Exactly What The Pacers Need Right Now

The Pacers opened the season with a 123-120 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, and one of the most encouraging signs came from a player who was supposed to help from the second unit. Obi Toppin gave Indiana a burst of offense off the bench, scoring 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting in 24 minutes while showing the kind of versatility that can make a rotation click.

For a team that wants to keep its tempo high and its lineups balanced, Toppins fit matters beyond one strong night. He gave Indiana scoring, movement and coverage across multiple positions, the sort of backup presence that can settle a bench group and keep the offense flowing when the starters sit. If the Pacers are looking for depth they can trust early, Toppin may already be answering the call. [Read more 🡒]

Tyrese Haliburton Added A Surprise Twist To His Pacers Comeback

Tyrese Haliburtons return gave the Pacers exactly the kind of lift they needed, and it came with a little extra flair before he even stepped on the floor. After recovering from the Achilles injury he suffered in June 2025, Haliburton was back in uniform and looked like himself again in his first game back, finishing with 23 points and 12 assists in Indianas win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

The night also carried an unexpected pop culture nod. Haliburton showed up in a pregame outfit that paid tribute to WWE star Triple H, and the gesture drew a response from Triple H on social media. For a Pacers team trying to settle back into its rhythm with its point guard leading the way again, it was a reminder that Haliburton can still turn a return game into a moment. [Read more 🡒]

Mavericks Already Face An Early Injury Problem They Cant Ignore

The early injury chatter around the league already has an Indiana angle, with several familiar names showing up on the latest availability reports. AJ Dybantsa will miss his regular season debut for Washington because of a left ankle sprain, while a string of other players are dealing with issues of their own, including Tristan Vukcevic, Felix Okpara, Santi Aldama, Tarik Biberovic and Dereck Lively II.

For the Pacers, the bigger concern is the state of their own rotation and how quickly these early absences can reshape a game plan. T.J. McConnell, Aaron Nesmith and Ben Sheppard are among the players listed as sidelined or questionable in recent updates, and when the injury report starts stacking up this early, every status check matters even more than usual.
