In a somber moment for the Indiana business community, David Simon, a pivotal figure in retail real estate, has passed away at 64 after a battle with cancer. As the chairman, CEO, and president of Simon Property Group, David was a transformative leader whose influence extended far beyond the company's headquarters in Indianapolis.
Taking the reins as CEO in 1995 at just 33, Simon guided the company to become the largest retail real estate entity globally. His journey began with a solid foundation from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, where he graduated in 1983.
David was part of a legacy, being the son of Mel Simon, who also succumbed to cancer in 2009. The family's contributions to Indiana University are notable, including a $50 million donation that led to the renaming of the Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Reflecting on his nephew's legacy, Pacers owner Herb Simon expressed deep sorrow. He lauded David's visionary leadership and the lasting impact he made on both the family and the industry.
"His vision, dedication, and discipline helped shape Simon Property Group into the world’s leading retail real estate company. His impact will be felt for generations," Herb shared, underscoring the profound loss felt by all who knew him.
David Simon's legacy is one of innovation and leadership, leaving a lasting imprint on the real estate world and the Indiana community. His contributions will continue to resonate, a testament to a life dedicated to excellence and growth.
