Philip Rivers has emerged as a serious name in North Carolina State’s coaching search, and the possibility comes with a twist that makes the whole thing even more intriguing: he could end up coaching his son, Gunner, at the college level.
According to multiple reports, the former NC State star and longtime NFL quarterback is a leading candidate to replace Dave Doeren, who was fired Oct. 24.
Rivers already has been back in the football world in an unexpected way, returning to the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts late in the 2025 season after nearly five years away from the league. Now he could be headed toward another surprise move.
Rivers spent 17 seasons in the NFL before retiring after the 2020 season. Since 2021, he has been the head coach at St.
Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, where he coaches Gunner Rivers. That connection matters here because Gunner, a four-star quarterback, committed to NC State in February.
So the idea on the table is simple and unusual: Rivers could potentially coach his son at both the high school and college levels.
Rivers has already been linked to the Wolfpack opening, and he didn’t exactly downplay the connection when asked about it. “NC State is special to me,” Rivers told Ben Thomas of AL.com on Friday night.
He also pointed back to Doeren’s run in Raleigh. “Coach Doeren, shoot, what he did over 14 years, the all-time winningest coach. (I have) a ton of respect and appreciation for how he went about it with the university.”
At St. Michael Catholic, Rivers has built a strong résumé of his own. He is 48-20 in six seasons and has never had a losing season.
His playing resume at NC State is just as decorated. Rivers won ACC Rookie of the Year in 2000, then took home ACC Offensive Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year honors in 2003 before earning ACC Athlete of the Year honors in 2004.
The idea of Rivers as a college head coach has also drawn support from someone who knows the Wolfpack well. Mike Glennon, a former NFL and NC State quarterback, talked about the possibility on SiriusXM College Sports Radio and put Rivers in rare company in school history.
“There’s a Mount Rushmore of N.C. State and definitely on there is Philip Rivers and he may be No. 1,” Glennon said.
“He is on a pedestal that I don’t even know if Jimmy V is on.”
Glennon also acknowledged the obvious concern: Rivers has no college coaching experience. Even so, he said the upside would be worth it.
“To me it’s worth the risk,” Glennon said. “Like, you only kinda get one shot to hire Philip Rivers.”
Rivers also interviewed for the Buffalo Bills’ head coaching vacancy in January, according to the original reporting.
Meanwhile, Gunner Rivers made it clear after St. Michael Catholic’s regular-season finale Friday night that Doeren’s firing hasn’t changed his plans. In a text message to Pack Power, he reaffirmed his commitment to NC State.
“I want to thank Coach Doeren for everything he did for me,” Rivers wrote.
“I knew every time I spoke with him he was gonna tell me the truth whether good or bad. And that was something I always appreciated.
He definitely left a good impression on me and my family. As far as my commitment goes, I’m staying 100% locked in with the PACK!
Excited to get to work here in a couple months.”
Gunner Rivers is one of the nation’s top-ranked quarterbacks, according to 247Sports. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback was limited by a knee injury in the season opener, but he still has thrown for 422 yards and six touchdowns in the 2026 campaign.
Over his four-year high school career, he has piled up more than 10,000 passing yards and more than 100 touchdown passes.
Philip Rivers already knows what it’s like to play high school football for his father. Now he could have the chance to coach his own son beyond the prep level, too.
For now, whether NC State actually makes the hire remains to be seen. But the possibility of a father-son pairing in Raleigh gives this coaching search a storyline few could have predicted.
Gunner Rivers has no doubt about what his father brings to the sideline.
“He’s the best coach you can have in high school football,” Gunner Rivers said.
“I am a little biased, but I think he’s the best high school football coach there is. He definitely could be coaching college or NFL, too. So, the fact that I get to learn from him at such a young age is special.”

Indiana Backcourt Depth Already Facing A Troubling Early Setback
Indianas backcourt depth took an early hit in practice when freshman guard Prince-Alexander Moody suffered a knee injury and is expected to miss an extended period while he undergoes further evaluation. Coach Darian DeVries said Moody will be out for quite some time, a tough development for a player who was expected to help stabilize the guard rotation this season.
For a Hoosiers team trying to build out its perimeter options, the timing makes the setback sting even more. Moody was one of the freshmen penciled in to supply depth and energy in the backcourt, and now Indiana has to wait for a clearer picture before it knows how much of that plan will need to be adjusted. Indianas Playoff Push Suddenly Centers On One Troubling Josh Hoover Question
Curt Cignettis decision to replace Josh Hoover at halftime in an overtime win over Minnesota added a new layer to Indianas playoff push, because the Hoosiers have been leaning on a quarterback whose recent play has not looked quite as sharp as it did earlier in the season. Hoover has been dealing with an unspecified injury, and the dip in his passing accuracy over the last few games has become hard to ignore as Indiana tries to keep its momentum rolling.
The concern now is less about one rough stretch than what it might mean for the stretch run ahead. Former college quarterbacks Danny Kanell and Joel Klatt both weighed in on Hoovers physical condition and confidence, and their comments only sharpened the sense that something is off. For Indiana, the bigger question is whether Hoover can get back to full form in time to keep the Hoosiers on track. [Read more 🡒]
Indianas Easy Win Came With One Backcourt Concern Fans Will Watch
Indianas season opener went the way most Hoosier fans would have wanted, with a steady wire-to-wire win over Eastern Illinois and a clear early identity taking shape. The offense kept pressure on the rim, the shot selection looked sharp, and the three-point touch gave the game a comfortable feel long before the final horn.
Prince-Alexander Moodys night, though, was the one subplot that lingered after the easy result. The freshman appeared injured during the game, and any issue there matters because Indianas backcourt depth is already something worth monitoring as the season gets rolling. [Read more 🡒]
