Nick Marsh came to Bloomington with a job to do, and through three games he’s starting to look like the right fit for it.
Indiana needed a receiver to step into a major role after Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper Jr. moved on to the NFL, and the 6-foot-3, 210-pound transfer from Michigan State has been asked to help carry that load right away. On Saturday against Western Kentucky, he delivered his most complete showing yet in No. 4 Indiana’s 38-0 win, finishing with seven catches for 81 yards.
That production nearly tripled his season total. Marsh had entered the game with just four receptions across the first two wins over North Texas and Howard, though he did score a touchdown in each of those games. Against Western Kentucky, he didn’t have the one explosive moment that usually grabs the spotlight, but he gave Indiana something just as valuable: steady, all-around work at receiver.
“I think he (Marsh) played really well…had a couple of key blocks,” head coach Curt Cignetti said postgame. “I think he’s coming. I really do.”
Those blocks mattered to Cignetti, even if they didn’t jump off the stat sheet.
Marsh’s growing comfort level has been obvious in the way Indiana has used him, and quarterback Josh Hoover said the receiver is trending in the right direction.
“Nick is a guy that is getting more comfortable each and every week. I think he’s going to have a big impact,” quarterback Josh Hoover added postgame. “I love the way that he works.”
Hoover and Marsh both arrived at Indiana during the winter, and their connection appears to be building with each passing week. Saturday’s game was another sign of that, with Marsh drawing a larger share of the targets as Indiana kept rolling.
Inside the receiver room, Marsh’s approach has already made an impression. Charlie Becker said the transfer is relentless about getting better and keeps the conversations going even in practice.
“He (Marsh) always wants to improve in his game…“We talk to each other during practices…saying what kind of look did you get…and how did you run your route based on that,” wide receiver Charlie Becker said postgame. “I love having him on my side.”
Becker and Marsh have given Hoover a strong one-two punch, and that balance has become a key part of Indiana’s offense. Through three games, Marsh has shown he can be more than just a replacement for what left the program. He’s starting to build something of his own in Bloomington.
Indiana is back home Friday, Sept. 25, for its Big Ten opener against Northwestern. The Hoosiers will try to move to 4-0, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. Eastern on FOX.
