Lamar Wilkerson is making waves in Bloomington, leaving an indelible mark on the IU basketball record books. Despite his brief stint with the Hoosiers, Wilkerson has already set a new program record for 3-pointers made in Big Ten contests, surpassing the legendary Steve Alford.
On a memorable Friday evening in West Lafayette, Wilkerson hit his 55th three-pointer in league play, edging past Alford's 54 set back in 1987-the inaugural season for the college basketball 3-point arc. Wilkerson's sharp shooting has seen him make 55 out of 147 attempts in conference games this season, while Alford's mark came from a 54-for-108 effort.
Wilkerson's prowess extends beyond makes; he's also set the program's single-season record for 3-point attempts, both overall and in conference play, with 231 and 147 attempts respectively.
Chasing another milestone, Wilkerson is eyeing Alford's overall single-season record of 107 made threes. Currently tied for third with Yogi Ferrell at 88 makes, Wilkerson needs 20 more to claim the top spot. Alford's remarkable 53% shooting from deep in the 1986-87 season remains a program benchmark.
Earlier this season, Wilkerson showcased his shooting skills with a record-breaking performance against Penn State, where he drained 10 of 15 from beyond the arc. That night, he also set the Assembly Hall single-game scoring record with 44 points. Adding to his accolades, Wilkerson became just the fifth Hoosier to notch multiple 40-point games in a single season after a standout performance against Oregon.
With 571 points this season, Wilkerson ranks 30th in Indiana's single-season scoring history. While Calbert Cheaney's record of 785 points might be out of reach, Wilkerson is on track to secure a spot among the top 10 scoring seasons for the Hoosiers.
Here's how the new Indiana leaderboard for 3-pointers made in a season during Big Ten games looks:
