IU Basketball Legends Stay Silent as Unbeaten Record Lives On

Despite Miami (Ohio) stumbling in the MAC Tournament, Indiana's legendary 1976 basketball team maintains their unbeaten legacy, reflecting on history without celebration as the last undefeated team remains elusive.

Indiana's reign as college basketball's last undefeated team continues to shine, now stretching beyond the 50-year mark. This season, the 2025-26 Hoosiers sported a special jersey patch to commemorate this historic achievement, which will now live on for a 51st season. The milestone was secured after Miami (Ohio), previously 31-0, was toppled by UMass in their MAC Tournament clash.

While Hoosier fans revel in this enduring distinction, the players from the legendary 1976 squad maintain a more understated approach. Former IU guard Quinn Buckner clarifies, “We don’t celebrate.

The Miami Dolphins might pop champagne, but we don’t do that. If they do, it’s without me, and I think they’d at least let me know.”

Tom Abernethy, another key figure from the 1976 team, shares that while they might have been ready to honor an undefeated champion at this year’s Final Four in Indianapolis, the 2026 title will not include an unblemished record. Yet, the significance of their achievement remains profound for fans.

Abernethy notes the personal impact: “My twins, now 46, have started calling me as teams begin to lose. My brother Spike also joins in. We’re not throwing wild parties, but within our family, it brings a chuckle.”

Miami’s remarkable run was one of the deepest in recent memory. Only Kentucky in 2015 and Gonzaga in 2021 have entered the NCAA Tournament undefeated in the past 12 years.

Indiana, under the legendary Bob Knight, also entered the 1975 NCAA Tournament undefeated before experiencing a loss, setting the stage for their perfect 32-0 season in 1976. Buckner recalls Knight’s confidence: “He said, ‘If you do what I’ve told you and practice it, it’ll be tough to beat you.’ And we did just that.”

This year also marks a dual celebration for Indiana, as they completed an undefeated college football season, the first 16-0 record at the highest level since 1894. Since the NCAA basketball tournament began in 1940, Indiana stands alone in achieving undefeated seasons in both football and basketball.
