In a significant move for Indiana University basketball, Thomas Carr is set to join the coaching staff under head coach Darian DeVries. Carr, previously an assistant at the University of Louisville, will fill the fifth assistant coach position, completing IU's coaching roster alongside Kenny Johnson, Rod Clark, Nick Norton, and Drew Adams.
Carr's journey to IU has been marked by a series of notable coaching roles. Most recently, he spent two seasons on Pat Kelsey’s staff at Louisville, following a two-year stint at the College of Charleston with Kelsey from 2022 to 2024. His impact in the coaching world hasn't gone unnoticed, as evidenced by his inclusion in Silver Waves Media’s 2026 100 Most Impactful High Major Assistants List.
Before his time at the College of Charleston, Carr served as the Athletics Director at Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 2020 to 2022. He also contributed to the Team Loaded NC program, a team that competes on the adidas 3SSB circuit.
Carr's coaching career is rooted in a solid foundation of experience. He was part of Kevin Keatts’ staff at North Carolina State as director of operations between 2017 and 2019 and previously worked with Keatts as an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington from 2014 to 2017. Carr's first foray into Division I coaching came at East Tennessee State during the 2013-2014 season.
His coaching path began at Washington High School in Danville, Virginia, where he was the head coach for the 2012-13 season. Carr’s initial coaching role was at Chipola College in the 2009-2010 season, and he further honed his skills under Keatts at Hargrave Military Academy from 2010 to 2012.
Carr's playing days saw him at Division III Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina, from 2006 to 2008, where he earned a degree in sports management. He started his basketball journey at St.
John’s Jesuit in Toledo, Ohio, and concluded his prep career at Hargrave Military Academy. A native of Westwood, New Jersey, Carr brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to IU basketball.
