Indiana’s season opener barely got rolling before the injury bug hit hard, and Curt Cignetti said Thursday night that he’s never had a game turn that quickly.
The No. 5 Hoosiers lost three starters in the first quarter of their 52-16 win over North Texas, with running back Khobie Martin expected to miss time until midseason after breaking bones in his forearm.
Starting cornerbacks Jamari Sharpe and A.J. Harris were also sidelined and are being treated as day-to-day.
“I've never played, I don't think, a football game where we lost three starters in the first quarter,” Cignetti said Thursday night on his weekly radio show. “Let alone the opening game of the year.”
Cignetti said earlier this week that Indiana’s corners were “day-to-day” and that Martin would likely be out until midseason. On Thursday, he added more detail about how Martin went down on just the second play of the game.
“On the second play (of the game), he had pass protection pick up on a blitzing linebacker,” Cignetti said, “and blitzed him, kind of got knocked over and landed, tried to stunt his fall and broke a couple bones in his forearm. Really high on that running back group.
Felt like we had three starters. I hate to lose him.”
Indiana had to navigate much of the game without Sharpe and Harris at corner, while the backfield took a hit with Martin out. The Hoosiers still finished with 134 rushing yards, though backup quarterback Grant Wilson padded that total with a 43-yard touchdown run late.
Cignetti pointed to the lack of big gains on the ground as one issue in the opener.
“We didn't have enough explosive runs; we had too many negative yardage runs,” Cignetti said. “And some of that was because they were going to come in and stop the run. And that's what they were going to do.”
