Indiana Suddenly Has A Backfield Problem At The Worst Time

Indiana's running back depth faces a critical test as injuries plague the roster ahead of their upcoming game against Rutgers.

Indiana’s backfield is suddenly looking awfully thin at the worst possible time.

Heading into Saturday’s Week 5 trip to Rutgers, the Hoosiers have three of their top running backs dealing with injury designations, and the latest Big Ten availability report added an especially uncomfortable twist. What started with known issues has turned into a full-blown depth test for Indiana’s ground game.

Redshirt sophomore Khobie Martin is already ruled out for the Rutgers game after breaking his forearm early in Week 1 against North Texas. The hope, according to the report, is that he can work his way back in the middle of the season.

Turbo Richard, meanwhile, appears to be trending in a better direction. He left the Week 4 game against Northwestern in the second quarter with what was later identified as a high ankle sprain after rushing for 68 yards on nine carries. The good news for Indiana is that Richard is listed as probable and could be back this week.

Then came the surprise. Lee Beebe Jr., who carried the offense in Richard’s absence with 203 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries against Northwestern, is now listed as questionable. Indiana likely doesn’t beat Northwestern without that performance, which makes his status especially important.

Sean Cuono is also questionable, giving Indiana four running backs on the availability report and putting real pressure on a unit that was supposed to be one of the roster’s strengths.

That strength looked obvious entering the 2026 season. Richard arrived through the transfer portal after posting 749 yards and 9 touchdowns at Boston College last year, and he has delivered for the Hoosiers with 383 yards, 7.7 yards per carry and 4 touchdowns so far.

Martin came back after a strong redshirt freshman season in 2025-26, when he piled up 505 yards and 6 rushing scores while Roman Hemby and Kaelon Black each topped 1,000 yards. He was supposed to be a breakout candidate this season, but that push is on hold for now.

Beebe’s situation is also a concern because he was productive in limited work last season before a season-ending injury in Week 3. He finished with 209 yards and 7.7 yards per rush.

Indiana expected to have a three-man hammer in the backfield with Richard, Martin and Beebe. Instead, the Hoosiers are headed to Rutgers with their running back room under real strain.

Indiana May Need These Starters Most To Stay Unbeaten At Rutgers

As Indiana gets ready for a Week 5 trip to Rutgers, the Hoosiers are staring at a familiar early-season problem: injuries in the running back room could force the offense to lean even harder on its other staples. That puts extra importance on quarterback Josh Hoover and offensive tackle Carter Smith, two players Indiana may need to steady things if the ground game is less than full strength.

The other side of the equation is just as demanding. Rutgers has a top target in wide receiver KJ Duff, and cornerback Jamari Sharpe is expected to have a key role in trying to slow him down. In a game where every matchup feels a little sharper because of the injuries Indiana is carrying, the Hoosiers may find themselves asking their starters to cover more than one job. [Read more 🡒]

Indianas Unbeaten Start Is Fueling A Huge Draft Rise For Three Hoosiers

Indianas unbeaten start has done more than keep the Hoosiers in the conversation on the field. It has also pushed three of their key players into an early spotlight on the draft circuit, with ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid placing wide receiver Charlie Becker, wideout Nick Marsh and offensive lineman Carter Smith among his top 50 prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft.

Becker comes in as Reids No. 8 overall prospect thanks to his size, speed and contested-catch ability, while Marsh lands at No. 26 for his physicality and route running. Smith checks in at No. 44 as a steady presence up front, a sign that Indianas unbeaten run is being built on more than one breakout star and that NFL evaluators are taking notice well before the 2026 season is over. Boise State Just Earned A Playoff Label Bronco Fans Will Love

The early chatter around the 2026 College Football Playoff picture is already starting to take shape, and the projections are leaning heavily on the usual powers. Georgia is being treated like the SEC standard again, Texas sits atop the AP poll after its win over Ohio State, and the broader conversation is built around which rsum will hold up when the selection committee finally has to sort through the field.

For Indiana fans, the intrigue is in how quickly that conversation can shift once the season settles in and the bigger matchups start deciding who gets the best label on the board. The latest look at the playoff seedings is still only a snapshot, but it already hints at a race where every heavyweight has something to prove and the margin for error will be thin well before December arrives.
