Indiana Stumbles Against Northwestern, Squandering Key NCAA Tournament Opportunity

Indiana's revamped lineup starts strong but falters as defensive woes lead to a decisive loss against Northwestern.

Indiana men's basketball had a shot at redemption against Northwestern at the United Center, with a clear path to the NCAA Tournament on the line. Unfortunately, the Hoosiers couldn't capitalize on the opportunity, echoing their earlier defeat to Northwestern.

Coach Darian DeVries shook things up with a fresh starting lineup, pairing big men Sam Alexis and Reed Bailey for the first time this season. The strategy aimed to address their rebounding woes from the previous matchup, but the execution fell short on the hardwood.

Offensively, Indiana found its rhythm early. Despite the twin towers approach, they maintained their usual spacing and ball movement.

Sam Alexis was a force in the paint, while Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries were hitting from beyond the arc. Even Conor Enright joined the three-point party.

However, the defensive side told a different story. Indiana managed just 11 defensive boards in the first half, with DeVries grabbing five and Wilkerson two. Bailey and Alexis, expected to dominate the glass, managed only one each-a disappointing output for two Big Ten centers.

The Hoosiers' defensive struggles were glaring. Despite the size advantage, they allowed Northwestern to rack up 24 points in the paint and shoot an impressive 55.2% from the field in the first half.

Thanks to their offensive prowess, Indiana built a nine-point lead. Yet, some strategic substitutions disrupted their defensive momentum, letting Northwestern claw back to within one by halftime.

The second half spiraled further downhill. Indiana's offense stalled for over five minutes without a field goal, and their defensive issues persisted. Northwestern capitalized, extending their lead to 18 points with just under seven minutes remaining, effectively sealing the game.

Indiana's attempt to rally with threes fell short, as they succumbed to Northwestern once again. The Hoosiers' quest for revenge and a clearer tournament path slipped through their fingers.
