Indiana’s cornerback rotation took an early hit in Week 1, and now one of the Hoosiers’ most watched fall camp battles is back in the spotlight.
A.J. Harris started against North Texas, but his night ended late in the first quarter after he was forced to leave the game. Rylan Gandy stepped in after Harris exited, giving Indiana an immediate look at the depth that had been tested all summer.
Harris came to Indiana from Penn State and was supposed to help fill the void left by D’Angelo Ponds, but injuries got in the way of his offseason and kept the competition alive for Gandy. Harris had also missed part of fall camp because of a knee injury, which made his status one to watch even before kickoff.
He was able to make it to the locker room under his own power, though he was clearly limping. The moment drew attention on social media as well, with a post noting that the cornerback “limped off the field after that last play.”
Indiana’s defense looked shaky on the opening series, though it still kept North Texas off the scoreboard. Harris was also flagged for defensive pass interference just before he left the field.
For the Hoosiers, the immediate concern is obvious: losing a starter, even briefly, forces the defense to adjust fast. Gandy now has to step into Harris’ role, and the injury could ripple through Indiana’s nickel and dime packages, too.
The bigger takeaway is that this is exactly why the battle mattered in camp. Harris eventually won the starting job, but barely a quarter into the season, Indiana may already be leaning on the fact that it had two real options at cornerback.
