The clock is almost up on Indiana’s season opener against North Texas, and the buildup has already produced a busy offseason worth sorting through. Between a record draft haul, a major transfer influx, rare coaching continuity and some legal uncertainty hanging over the roster, there’s been plenty for Hoosier fans to track before Week 1 arrives.
The biggest headline came after Indiana’s National Championship-winning season, when the program set a new benchmark at the 2026 NFL Draft. Eight Hoosiers were selected, breaking the school record of seven that dated all the way back to 1976, when the draft stretched across 17 rounds.
Fernando Mendoza led the way as the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback went No. 1 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders. Omar Cooper Jr. also heard his name called in the first round, going 30th overall to the New York Jets.
That made Mendoza and Cooper the first pair of Hoosier teammates to be drafted in the first round of the same NFL Draft.
Indiana’s roster turnover didn’t stop there. Curt Cignetti once again worked the transfer portal to his advantage, and the Hoosiers signed 17 transfers to land the No. 1-ranked portal class in the country, according to On3.
Josh Hoover is the headliner of that group. The former TCU quarterback arrives in Bloomington after four seasons and brings a résumé that includes 31 starts, nearly 10,000 passing yards and 71 touchdowns.
Indiana also added WR Nick Marsh, EDGE Tobi Osunsanmi and RB Turbo Richard among its top-rated portal pickups.
What makes this offseason stand out even more is what Indiana kept in place. Cignetti retained his entire coaching staff, which is a major rarity in today’s college football landscape.
The Hoosiers also brought back a meaningful group of contributors from last year’s title team. On offense, that list includes WR Charlie Becker, OT Carter Smith, RB Khobie Martin and K Nico Radicic.
On defense, Indiana returns four of its top-five sack leaders, with DT Tyrique Tucker, DT Mario Landino, LB Rolijah Hardy, LB Isaiah Jones, CB Jamari Sharpe and S Amare Ferrell among the names back in the mix.
The recruiting momentum has also reached a level Indiana had never seen before. On July 17, Lawrence North wide receiver Monshun Sales became the first 5-star high school commit in IU history.
Sales picked the Hoosiers over Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Texas. Rivals ranked him as the No. 2 receiver and No. 7 overall player in the 2027 class at the time of his commitment.
247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins called Sales a "one of the biggest freakshows in the country with his hulking frame and elite athletic markers," and projected him as a potential game-wrecker for a College Football Playoff contender.
Not every offseason development has been straightforward, though. NCAA eligibility rules have been tangled up in legal battles, and that mess has had a direct effect on Indiana’s 2026 roster.
A July decision from a U.S. District Court judge in Colorado granted an extra year of eligibility to thousands of athletes from the high school Class of 2022, including Indiana defensive linemen Kellan Wyatt and Stephen Daley.
Both players initially said they planned to return.
That changed after the NCAA won a legal appeal from the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, which paused their eligibility. At the moment, Daley and Wyatt are practicing with the Hoosiers in fall camp, but they cannot suit up. The situation remains unsettled, and more legal action could follow, but with kickoff approaching, their status for game action remains in serious doubt.
