Indiana’s 2027 recruiting board already has one name on it, but the Hoosiers just moved into the conversation for one of the class’s biggest prizes.
That player is Darius Wabbington, the Phoenix, AZ native who trimmed his list to six schools on Tuesday and included Indiana among the finalists. For Darian DeVries, it’s another sign that the Hoosiers are in the hunt for elite frontcourt talent after making Wabbington an offer on July 20, 2025.
Wabbington’s list also features Arizona, Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisville, and Texas. Joe Tipton of On3 was first to report the finalists, and he also noted that the 2027 big man has already lined up his first three official visits for the fall.
Those trips will take him to Louisville on September 11, Arizona on September 25, and Texas on October 9, according to 247Sports. Indiana has not yet locked in a visit date, but the Hoosiers are expected to get one at some point.
The timing matters for Indiana. DeVries’ first season showed just how much the program needed more size and athleticism in the frontcourt when dealing with Big Ten competition. After the season, he made it clear that rebuilding that area was a priority in the portal.
This offseason, he acted on it by landing Alabama power forward Aiden Sherrell and SMU center Samet Yigitoglu, two of the better big men available. That gives Indiana a much stronger look heading into 2026-27, and Wabbington would add another major piece to the long-term picture.
The rankings match the buzz. 247Sports has Wabbington as a 5-star prospect, while Rivals lists him as the No. 1 center in the 2027 class. He’s built like a true interior force at 6'11" and 245 pounds, and he brings more than just rim protection and above-the-rim finishing.
Even though he’s a center in high school, Wabbington could end up at power forward in college. He can put the ball on the floor, create off the dribble, and stretch defenses by making shots from outside. That kind of versatility is exactly the sort of fit that could make him appealing in DeVries’ system.

Indianas 2027 recruiting class still has plenty of blue-chip promise, but the Hoosiers have already taken hits with two four-star commits backing off their pledges. The biggest one may be Monsanna Torbert Jr., the top cornerback in the group and Indianas highest-ranked commitment in the cycle before he reopened his recruitment.
Torbert is set to make his next decision live on July 1, and Indiana remains technically on the list even after the decommitment. IU Names Tom Froehle To Key Leadership Role Starting Aug. 17
Indiana University is turning to a familiar name in Indiana legal circles for one of its most important administrative jobs. Tom Froehle has been named the schools new vice president and general counsel, a move that will take effect Aug. 17 and put him in charge of advising the university on the legal issues that come with running a major public institution.
Froehle arrives with more than 30 years of experience counseling corporations, universities and government entities, and his background includes work with Honda, the NCAA and United Airlines. IU president Pamela Whitten said the university is getting a leader with the experience and judgment needed for a complex public university, while Froehle called the role an honor as he prepares to succeed Anthony Prather in the post.
