Five games into Big Ten play, Nebraska is still standing in the middle of the conference picture, and the picture keeps getting messier.
The Huskers are 5-0 after shaking off a sluggish first half against Maryland on Saturday and then rolling to a 48-23 win. Nebraska shut out the Terrapins over the final 2½ quarters, a stretch that kept the Huskers moving through a league where simply surviving each week already feels like an accomplishment.
That matters because the Big Ten is loaded with undefeated teams. Seven schools entered the weekend unbeaten in conference play, and after Saturday’s results, Indiana, Nebraska and UCLA are the only undefeated teams overall.
Ohio State and Indiana handled business. Minnesota and Wisconsin both won in ways that raised eyebrows.
UCLA and Oregon were idle.
For Nebraska, the biggest test on the horizon arrives Saturday when Indiana comes to Memorial Stadium for an 11 a.m. kickoff on FOX. It is the kind of game Nebraska fans had circled when the schedule came out, and it now stands as Matt Rhule’s biggest game in his four seasons in Lincoln. It is a major one for Indiana, too, with the defending national champions continuing to build on a remarkable three-year run.
Indiana improved to 5-0 by winning at Rutgers, 47-15, on Saturday. Josh Hoover, the TCU transfer, was efficient and steady at quarterback, throwing for 251 yards and four touchdowns.
Turbo Richard gashed Rutgers for 204 rushing yards on 13 carries, and Lee Beebe Jr. added 122 yards on 18 attempts. Nebraska’s tackling will be a central issue in that matchup, because Indiana has shown it can run the ball and will keep doing it until somebody stops it.
Oregon used its bye week after beating USC in Los Angeles, 41-27, the week before. Dan Lanning said quarterback Dante Moore is in good shape after the concussion he suffered against USC.
Former Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola filled in and went 289 yards and two touchdowns, a performance that may have saved the Ducks’ season. Oregon now hosts unbeaten UCLA on Saturday.
USC’s own weekend was a little less comfortable. The Trojans went to Washington and won 25-21 on Saturday night after erasing a double-digit second-half deficit.
Defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart changed the game with a 48-yard touchdown after a fumble recovery. Washington is 3-2 and gets another big one Friday at home against Iowa, while USC, now 5-1, heads to Penn State on Saturday.
That Washington game could end up carrying real College Football Playoff weight, because the loser may be pushed to the edge of elimination. Nebraska’s trip to Washington is still ahead, and early as it is, that one already looks like a potential separator.
Illinois was another team Nebraska has already had to think about, and Saturday did little to make the Illini look more dangerous. Purdue, which came in at 2-3, went into Illinois and won 24-17.
The week before, Ohio State had beaten Illinois 42-19. Illinois, also 2-3, visits Michigan State on Saturday, and Nebraska will know the Illini remain a threat at home on a Friday night regardless of how the next month goes.
Rutgers, after the loss to Indiana, sits at 1-4 and has a bye before heading to Maryland on Oct. 17.
Ohio State’s offense kept flashing in a 31-14 win at Iowa. Julian Sayin completed 20 of 27 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns.
Jeremiah Smith piled up 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns, and he also became Ohio State’s career leader in receptions with 207, receiving yards with 3,381 and receiving touchdowns with 36. Smith even hit the Heisman pose.
Ohio State is 4-1 and hosts Maryland on Saturday.
Iowa’s loss at home dented its hopes. The Hawkeyes were trying to build a College Football Playoff case, but the 31-14 defeat tightened the road ahead. The Black Friday finale against Nebraska suddenly looks like it could mean more than just the rivalry.
Michigan State was unable to rebound from its 31-13 loss to Nebraska the previous week. Wisconsin hammered the Spartans 31-3, and the Badgers may be a team plenty of opponents would rather avoid.
Wisconsin quarterback Colton Joseph, who followed a path similar to Nebraska’s Anthony Colandrea, was the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year in 2025 at Old Dominion. Against Michigan State, Joseph completed 9 of 20 passes for 145 yards, but three of those completions went for touchdowns.
He also ran 13 times for 141 yards and a score.
Michigan lost its first road game of the season at Minnesota, 20-14. The Wolverines are 3-2, while Minnesota is 4-1 and looking solid.
Northwestern also turned heads by opening its new Ryan Field with a 34-13 win over Penn State, piling up 413 rushing yards in the process. Michigan and Northwestern are not on Nebraska’s schedule, but the rest of the conference keeps shaping the path in front of the Huskers.

Indiana Will Help Reveal What Nebraskas Hot Start Really Means
Nebraskas unbeaten start has turned heads, but the next stretch of Big Ten play should tell a lot more about what this team actually is. The Huskers are 5-0 and have already shown some grit, including in a recent win over Maryland, yet there is still plenty of uncertainty about how steady they are on both sides of the ball as the schedule gets tougher.
Indiana is part of the test now, and that matters because conference games tend to strip away the early-season noise. Nebraska has looked capable enough to keep winning, and Anthony Colandrea has been among the players drawing attention for his role in that run, but the Hoosiers are one of the teams that can help show whether this hot start is a true sign of progress or just a strong opening month waiting for a reality check. Indianas Biggest Test Just Got Even Bigger Before Ohio State Visit
Indianas trip to Ohio State was already shaping up as one of the biggest games on the schedule, and the Buckeyes only added to the sense of urgency with what they did in Week 5. After beating Iowa 31-14, Ohio State moved to the top of ESPNs FPI rankings, a reminder of how complete and dangerous this roster looks heading into a matchup that will carry real weight for Indiana.
Jeremiah Smith was a major part of that surge, setting program records for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in the win. Elsewhere in the rankings shakeup, Missouris 45-17 win over Florida sent the Gators tumbling five spots, but for Indiana the focus is squarely on what awaits in Columbus and how high the ceiling is for the opponent standing in the way. Curt Cignetti Still Found One Problem In Indianas Blowout Win
Indiana rolled to a 47-15 win over Rutgers and backed it up with the kind of statistical edge that usually makes a coach feel pretty good about the afternoon. The Hoosiers outgained Rutgers 593-254 and piled up big numbers on the ground and through the air, but Curt Cignetti still came away with a sharper view of the performance than the scoreboard suggested.
Cignetti pointed to second-half mistakes as the part that bothered him most, especially the two Rutgers touchdowns allowed after Indiana had already built control of the game. For a team trying to stack complete performances, the lopsided finish still left a lesson in how quickly a comfortable lead can get a little messier than it should be. [Read more 🡒]
