Indiana football heads to Piscataway on Saturday for its first road game of the 2026 season, and Rutgers is the kind of opponent that can make a favorite work a little harder than expected. SHI Stadium will host Curt Cignetti’s first meeting with the Scarlet Knights as Indiana’s head coach, and Greg Schiano’s team has already shown it can hang around - Rutgers has won the last three meetings, including two in Bloomington.
Indiana is still the stronger team on paper, but this matchup comes with a few pressure points. Rutgers pushed USC into a fourth quarter game at home this season, and the Scarlet Knights have at least enough firepower to make the Hoosiers answer some questions. Here are three bold predictions for Saturday.
KJ Duff gives Indiana’s secondary some problems
Indiana’s defense got its first real test of the season last Friday against Northwestern, and the passing game had success against the Hoosiers. Aidan Chiles finished 22 of 29 for 293 yards and two touchdowns, while tight end Luke Dehnicke was nearly impossible to slow down with seven catches for 140 yards. Griffin Wilde added six receptions for 56 yards and both of Chiles’ touchdown grabs.
Rutgers does not run the same offense or have the same collection of weapons, but it does have a receiver who can tilt the field. KJ Duff has been sensational through four games, piling up 29 catches for 550 yards and seven touchdowns.
The concern for Indiana is obvious. Duff is a huge target at 6’6” and 225 pounds, a frame that gives him a similar kind of matchup problem to what Dehnicke presented last week. He has accounted for most of Rutgers’ passing production and nearly doubles the catches of the Scarlet Knights’ next-leading receiver, Jourdin Houston.
That’s why this lands as a bold prediction. Indiana has generally done a solid job against top wideouts under Curt Cignetti, with Jeremiah Smith standing out as the exception.
But with D’Angelo Ponds out, this is a tougher assignment. Rutgers will go to Duff early, and he should make his presence felt.
Lee Beebe Jr. keeps rolling on the ground
Indiana’s backfield is not in great shape right now. Khobie Martin is already out with the arm injury he suffered earlier this season, and Turbo Richard left the Northwestern game with a leg injury.
Cignetti said Monday that he was optimistic about Richard’s chances to play, and Indiana listed him as probable on Wednesday night’s initial availability report. Sophomore Sean Cuono also showed up on that report as questionable.
That leaves Indiana thin at running back, which means the workload should fall heavily on Lee Beebe Jr. if Richard cannot go or is limited. Beebe Jr. was outstanding against Northwestern, and the matchup with Rutgers points to another productive night.
The Scarlet Knights have shown vulnerability against the run in losses to UMass, Boston College and USC, and Indiana may need to lean on Beebe Jr. again whether it wants to or not.
Charlie Becker does not lead Indiana in receiving
Charlie Becker has been Indiana’s leading receiver in all four games this season, which is a different look from what the Hoosiers saw in 2025, when Omar Cooper Jr. and Elijah Sarratt traded turns through the first four games. In 2024, the team had four different leaders in receiving yards across its first four games.
That kind of balance is still something Indiana needs if the passing game is going to reach a higher level in 2026. Nick Marsh saw his role grow significantly against Northwestern, but Becker still finished with 98 yards, well ahead of Marsh’s 52.
This week could be the start of more variety in the passing game. Marsh is one option, while Tyler Morris, Shazz Preston and Davion Chandler are all candidates to step up too. Indiana’s receiver group is still taking shape, and that development will be one of the more interesting parts of the season to watch.

Indiana Is In The Hunt For A Massive DeVries Recruiting Win
Indiana is in the thick of a major recruiting battle for one of the top big men in the 2027 class, as five-star center Darius Wabbington has trimmed his list to the Hoosiers, Illinois and Arizona. Wabbington has already taken official visits to all three programs, giving each staff a chance to make its pitch to a highly regarded center who would be a major get for whichever school lands him.
The process is still far from over, though, and that is what keeps this one in play for Mike Woodson's successor and the Hoosiers' next recruiting push. Wabbington also has other visits lined up later this fall, so Indiana has already made the cut but still has more work to do before this race starts to close. [Read more 🡒]
Rutgers Gave USC A Real Fight And Indiana Fans Should Notice
Rutgers opened its 2026 season with a loss to UMass and still sits at 1-3, but the Scarlet Knights have shown enough fight in recent weeks to make people pay attention. Against Boston College and then USC, Rutgers was competitive in ways that matter for teams around the Big Ten, with quarterback Dylan Lonergan, running back Antwan Raymond and wide receiver KJ Duff each helping keep the offense moving.
For Indiana fans, the bigger takeaway is less about Rutgers record and more about the style of game it brought to USC. The detailed breakdown of that matchup showed the Scarlet Knights finding answers on offense and making the Trojans work for everything, which is the sort of performance that can travel in conference play. Even if the final result still leaves Rutgers in a hole, the recent stretch suggests this is not a group opponents can afford to take lightly. [Read more 🡒]
Indiana Fans Have A New Recruiting Weekend To Obsess Over
The recruiting calendar is already giving Indiana fans another reason to keep one eye on the scoreboard and the other on the travel schedule. Chase Branham, the future Hoosiers guard, is in Las Vegas this week for the Wootten 150 basketball camp, while several other top Indiana targets are spread across the Border League event, where a number of highly regarded prospects with Hoosiers offers are also competing.
For Indiana, the appeal is obvious: these fall runs offer a fresh look at players the staff is still sorting through, and a chance to watch them in a setting packed with talent. Darius Wabbington, who has already taken an official visit to Bloomington, is among the names to keep tracking as he works through his college options, which gives this weekend a little extra weight for a fan base that has been waiting for the next recruiting wave to take shape.
